Astrid was a precocious child. She began tinkering as soon as her hands could hold tools. Her father was a jolly man that made simple clocks. Her mother had left them two years after her birth. She had been dissatisfied with her husband's success and decided to divorce him, relinquished all parental rights to her daughter and marry into a more successful family. Her father had never disparaged her mother growing up. He always spoke highly of her and provided a safe, comforting home for her to thrive in. When she came back from school with the highest mark of any student in recent history they celebrated with a rare slice of cake.
After her graduation her father had given her a space in the workshop for her own projects and a space in the shop to sell out of. Plumbing quickly became her obsession. She was one of the innovators of the piping system used to heat the cities of the Dimmin. Her discovery of brass as a perfect means to redistribute hot water made her an overnight sensation. Her father had never said a bad word but Astrid had heard plenty from the rest of the town. So when her mother came crawling back begging for forgiveness, Astrid shut the door of their new mansion in the rich part of the city in her face. Her father continued making his clocks but was able to afford more delicate materials to add little mechanical additives that transformed his clocks into intricate works of art with different themes. They became a new sensation for the rich, and his clocks became the most sought after in the city.
With her invention a great sensation and business booming Astrid was happy. She became so successful that the Conclave of Craft invited her to fill a vacant seat. In the space of a decade she became the Grand Sage in an unprecedented unanimous vote.
