Aquitaine
Aquitaine is a large duchy in south-west France, Its chief town is Bordeaux (population c. 15,000). The duchy makes up nearly a quarter of the total area of the Kingdom of France.
The dominant culture of Aquitaine is Occitanian, very distinct from the Frankish culture of northern France. The Occitan language is different from the French spoken in northern France.
Aquitaine is renowned for its wines, and several towns, including Bordeaux, are exempt from English import taxes. It's also renowned for its noble poets and songwriters, the troubadours, and the musicians who perform their work, the jongleurs. These poets and performers have popularised the ideas and ideals of Courtly Love which are becoming fashionable across Europe.
