Richard and Philip meet in Vézelay, Burgundy, and begin their separate journeys to Outremer.
Richard and Philip meet at Vezelay, Burgundy, on 2 July and swear an oath to divide all they conquer equally. On 4 July they ride to Lyons with their armies. The collapse of a wooden bridge over the Rhône delays the rear of the army for three days. The armies split at Lyon. Philip travels to Genoa, where he has contracted a fleet to take him to Outremer. Ricahrd arrives in Marseille on 31 July, expecting to meet his fleet. But the fleet had been delayed in Lisbon where Robert de Sable's and Richard de Canville's squadrons were waiting for William de Forz's squadron of 30 ships. During the wait, their sailors attacked the city's Muslim and Jewish population, ravaged vinyards and commited atrocities. King Sancho I imprisoned hundreds of English sailors. By the time the fleet arrives in Marseille on 22 August, Richard had left abourd hired ships. He sent one contingent of his army. under the leadership of Baldwin, Archbishop of Canterbury, Rannulf Glanville and Hubert Walter, Bishop-elect of Salisbury, directly to Outeremer in hired ships. They arrived in Tyre on 16 September. His own contingent boarded 10 large ships known as busses, and 20 galleys, sand sailed first to Genoa, where King Philip was ill. Richard spent 5 days in Portofino, and sailed down the Italian coast to th emouth of the Tiber, though he did not go to Rome. He spent 10 days sightseeing in Naples and 5 in Salerno. There he heard news that his fleet had completed a refit in Marseille and would rendezvous with him in Messina, Sicily. Richard reaches Messina on 22 September, to Philip had arrived a week earlier.
