Earthfall Chasm
Earthfall Chasm is a massive canyon almost a mile deep, 20 miles long, and over 15 miles across in places. Several surface rivers tumble into it, including the White Flume river, the site of the village of Kalai.
Geography
Besides being remarkable for its depth and scale, Earthfall Chasm is also notable for scores of towering spires of rock which stand like slender, craggy towers. Some rise over a thousand feet over the canyon floor and are topped with soil and vegetation, or even small stands of trees.
On end of the Chasm emerges near a tidal fjord that experiences dramatic bore tides that change that water level by twelve feet twice per day. When the flood tide comes in, the last couple of feet top a rocky rise that allows the seawater to spill over into the Chasm floor. Consequently, the floor of the Chasm holds a massive brine lake that is surrounded by many areas of saltwater marsh.
Because of the daily saltwater incursion, there is little potable water in the Chasm. except at the several freshwater rivers that fall over the sides above.
Earthfall is also infamous for the thick fogs and mists that rise up quickly and without warning. It is known that either fog itself--or something within in--is dangerous. The people of Kalai have a saying:
The Chasm claims those caught in the mist.
