Frostfall

Positioned as a bulwark against the wild, Frostfall has adapted to its harsh circumstances, morphing from a mere settlement into a well-oiled machine of survival and defense. Its geographical location at the kingdom's periphery, while posing a plethora of challenges, has rendered Frostfall a unique and crucial role within Dalr – a sentinel against the unknown.   In the arctic expanse of the north, myriad threats loom. Apart from the harsh climate and hazardous terrain, the denizens of Frostfall have tales of lurking horrors that venture from the icy wilderness, especially during the long, bitter winters. These include formidable beasts, mythical in their terror, and mysterious tribes known only through hushed whispers and legends. The threat of these unknown entities fosters a state of constant vigilance among the Frostfall residents.   Frostfall’s defense is centered around a group known as the Frostwardens - a unique blend of rangers, hunters, and warriors, equipped with the knowledge and the skill to endure and battle in the extreme conditions. Using weapons crafted from the very ice that defines their homeland, they guard Frostfall's borders and venture into the wild to preempt any threats.   The settlement maintains a well-bred team of snow-runners - fast, resilient creatures capable of traversing the icy wilderness swiftly. In the event of a significant threat, these runners serve as crucial messengers, relaying urgent communiques to Dalr's army. Moreover, Frostfall is also equipped with a series of beacon towers - if lit, their blazing fires are visible from a great distance, signalling imminent danger.   Culturally, Frostfall is a testament to Dalr's spirit of resilience. The people are known for their rugged tenacity, hospitable nature, and a sense of community forged in adversity. Their lifestyle is deeply intertwined with the ice and snow - they build their homes from compacted snow, known as "snowsteads," create intricate ice sculptures during festivals, and even their cuisine is centered around what can be harvested from the ice, like ice-fish and frostberries.   A rite of passage called "The Frostwalk" marks the transition from childhood to adulthood in Frostfall. In this ceremony, adolescents are sent into the wilderness with minimal supplies and must return with a trophy from one of the fearsome beasts of the north, symbolizing their readiness to face the challenges of life and protect their community.   The people of Frostfall see themselves not as the edge of civilization, but rather as the shield that guards it. This perspective, born from their daily face-off with harsh realities, has fostered a deep sense of pride in their role and an unwavering resilience against the odds. Thus, they stand - unbowed, unbroken - the indomitable sentinel in the frost.

Infrastructure

The settlement is built around a central fortress known as the Frostheart Keep, which also houses the headquarters of the Frostwardens. The main streets radiate out from the keep, with buildings constructed from stone, ice, and hearty northern timber.
