Session 3: Goblin hunting!

General Summary

An extract from the humble tome’s of the epic “Through Darkness Until the Light; The Fall of an Empire” by Saramonus the Pure ; lover, bard, free spirt, official chronicler & part time accountant. Volume 1, Chapter 7.

A simple raiding

Indebted & miserable & down to their last round, our trusty heroes discover a pamphlet offering work and they leap at the chance to fight villainy for coin. Black Fist Sergent Elg Ironheart, so cold & dead inside that she was total immune to the rugged looks of Atlendor (impossible I hear you cry!), offered 50gp for information on the goblin raids on nearby farms and a further 150gp for resolving it.
Tracking the goblin raiding party deep into the marshes outside of Phlan, they came across a worrying scene; a vile giant of a hobgoblin, Grimgotz with his goblin horde talking to a magically cloaked stranger wearing an ominous dragon mask. The figure promised further payment & more powerful magic in exchange for continuing to raid Phlan’s farms and cut off the town’s food supplies. The farmers themselves were to be offered up in sacrifice in some foul scheme.
Without a second’s hesitation, they assaulted the goblin stronghold, cleaving through their number like a hot pike through hamm. Deep with the lair, they soon discovered Grimgotz himself, presiding over the farmer’s pillage and loot, and in possession of a powerful dragon tooth to which he did wield in an attempt to lay waste to our heroes. Using cunning, agile and brute strength, they did overcome him. They released the captive farmers, whilst taking the dragon tooth for themselves. They also meet Calos, a Zhentarimagent; he too was tracking the goblins and in appreciation for his rescue gave them a Zhentarim pin and a promise for more work if they visited the Zhentarim recruiting office in New Town.

A Hero’s Welcome

Returning with the head of Grimgotz, they received their payment in gold and a hero’s welcome at the Tea Kettle. After announcing the name of their party to the world, the celebrations were cut brutally short by four Tharian Orcs. In the subsequent bar room brawl, they managed to kill three (at least one of them indirectly), the final they took captive. Though they learned it had a connection to the dragon tooth, before they could interrogate it more, a squad of veteran & heavily armed Black Fists lead by an ex-Banite priest Garlon Mais stormed the tavern and retrieved Tharian and its dead comrades. They were however compensated for their troubles and told to seek him out at the Black Gate lest they need anything.
Madame Freona, cursing the Black Fists name, slips you a list of names including your own she found on the Tharian. Some are already crossed out. Either way, you are being hunted….

• The party rescued a Zhentarim named Calos who gave them a Zhentarim pin
• Tharian mercenaries had been hired to kill the party
• They have the list of names of other targets the Tharians were hunting
• An ex-banite Black Fist Marlon Gais took the last orc into custody & offered the party to visit him at the Black Gate
