Lords' Alliance
For a century and a half, the Lords' Alliance has stood as a beacon of peace by strength across the civilised lands of north-western Faerûn. The influence of our Alliance has kept people safe from the predations of larger powers, has kept the ambitions of usurpers in check, and has taught leaders of many realms that it is better to cooperate than to shut one's doors and allow the storms to gather and rage outside.Ulder Ravengard, Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate
Founded early in the 14th century DR, the Lords' Alliance is a partnership of cities from the Sword Coast and the North and Western Heartlands, and so is one of the most definitively structured and overt political factions on the continent. Also known as the Council of Lords, due to its leadership being comprised of representatives from the governing bodies of ten of its largest member cities, it was formed to mutually oppose the growing influence of the Black Network in the North, the Shadow Thieves of Amn, Northlander raiders and incursions by "tribal" forces.
As with any political group, motivations and ambitions within the Alliance are invariably self-serving, with constituents often holding views and pushing interests that conflict with others, but these rivalries are put aside when true danger emerges to threaten the collective safety and prosperity, and it is undeniable that true good has manifested when the Lords Alliance has collaborated on its endeavours.
That acknowledged, while the official creed is a belief in the preservation of civilization for the betterment of the people, “the people” are invariably those deemed the responsibility of member city states. The Alliance might be unlikely to allow a settlement within their reach to succumb to the “uncivilised”, but the principal interest of the Lords’ Alliance is in serving the best interests of the Lords’ Alliance.
However, participation in the Lords’ Alliance is not limited to the governing leadership - most anyone can make an oath of allegiance by swearing to uphold the tenets of preserving civilization for the better of their people and striving for prosperity and the betterment of the Alliance. This scope allows everyone from lowly adventurers to influential merchants, nobles and provincial leaders to self-indulgently pursue almost any personal agenda in the name of the Lords’ Alliance, provided it can be justified as being for the greater good.
