Valna Mellerelel

"She's like a porcupine - small, cute, and really good at stabbing things."
Valna Mellerelel (born 2 Tarsakh 1445) is a wood elf ranger and member of the Arrowheads. An expert archer and survivalist, Valna is especially proficient at navigating forests. Valna is a trained Horizon Walker, and is an expert on planar mechanics. She is very devoted to her brother, Altin, who she protects with her life.

Table of Contents

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Valna is a small wood elf, agile but physically weak. She's dexterous, has good hand-eye coordination (especially with a longbow), and has heightened senses, even for a wood elf.

Special abilities

Valna is trained in the traditional manner of a wood elf ranger, including forestry and archery. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of most plants and animals found in the forests of Faerûn. As a trained ranger, she can also cast spells through a primal connection to the Weave. In addition to her traditional ranger training, she is also trained as a Horizon Walker. The magic she has gained through that allows her to teleport very short distances at will without requiring a spell like misty step, as well as infusing planar energy into her attacks.

Apparel & Accessories

Valna typically wears practical, rugged gear, often in natural colours like greens and browns. Her preferred armour is studded leather, which she uses a custom-made set of. She also always wears a long cloak for protection from the rain. Recently, Valna has begun experimenting with less practical and more 'appealing' outfits, having learned this behaviour from Sariel Liadon.

Specialized Equipment

Valna owns a magical bow named autumn's sentinel, handed down through her family. It can magically transform an arrow nocked in it into a special kind of magical arrow, and can also magically transform into a pair of swords. In addition to her bow, she also carries an amulet of the planes, which she received during her service with the Ardent. She's not the best with it though, and occasionally gets lost for a while hopping between planes. Valna usually wears some more generic kinds of magic items, such as magical leather armour and a periapt of proof against poison, rendering her immune to all poisons.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Valna was born on the 2nd of Tarsakh, 1445 DR, in a small village in the High Forest to Hadarai and Collena Mellerelel. The second youngest of six siblings, Valna had an ordinary childhood with a few friends, but grew especially close to her brother Altin. She and her siblings grew up in the High Forest, learning the ways of rangers and druids from her parents and other wood elves. Valna in particular learned much about woodland survival from a grizzled ranger, and became an excellent archer by an early age.   However, by 1484 DR, Valna had become bored with life in the High Forest, and wished to explore the outside world. She convinced her brother Altin to come along with her to study at the library-fortress of Candlekeep, hundreds of miles to the south of her home. He agreed, and the two set off. After nearly three months of travel, they finally made it to their destination. Although they were only able to stay for a tenday, Valna insisted on returning often with a new book in order to study as much as possible. In the meantime, they stayed with Claria Goldwood and her family in the Upper City of Baldur's Gate. The two also made occasional expeditions to the Cloakwood in order to practice their nature-focused abilities. In late 1492 DR, the two made their way to the Ardeep Forest, in order to join up with the brand-new Ardent mercenary company and finally go on some real adventures.

Valna and Altin were both assigned to Beta Team and began their training. However, this proved to be something of a formality, as both were significantly more experienced than the Nightstone militia hired to train them. In early 1493 DR, Beta Team had its training period concluded. Their first quest was to investigate the House of Stone in Ardeep Forest. This would eventually lead them on a plane-spanning adventure, fighting the forces of the drow House Helvirae, and concluding in the Battle of Menzoberranzan.

Although Beta Team disbanded after the conflict, Valna and her brother stayed with the Ardent. Valna was soon offered a place in the newly-formed and elite Arrowheads team by Sariel Liadon, and moved to its new headquarters in Waterdeep.

Education

Valna has received two very different educations. Her first one was in the High Forest from traditional wood elf rangers, teaching her survival and how to be a ranger. Her second education was in her 40s, learning about the planes and magic in Baldur's Gate and Candlekeep.

Employment

During her decades in the High Forest, Valna didn't have employment in a traditional sense. Instead, she mostly helped out around her village with her parents and family without a direct economic benefit. When she moved to Baldur's Gate, she took up employment as an adventurer or guard on a casual basis. She didn't have steady employment until she joined the Ardent as part of Beta Team. Following her exploits there, she was invited to join the elite Arrowheads adventuring group.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Valna is motivated entirely by a drive to explore and uncover new things, much to the chagrin of her brother Altin. She loves learning new information and telling people about it, regardless of whether they want to listen or not. She also likes to strive to do good in the world, just like heroes in old stories.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Valna is particularly adept when it comes to the traditional elven ranger disciplines: archery, two-weapon fighting, sneaking, survival, and basic magic. Physically, she is a strong swimmer and climber, and is good at acrobatics. She is also highly knowledgeable about the planes, especially the sixteen outer planes.

Although she can climb, swim, and leap with ease, Valna is otherwise physically weak compared to most people, owing to her small size. She also struggles in social situations, but that is something she has worked on and improved at. While she can read people fairly easily, she struggles to actively hold to unspoken social norms - she often interrupts people or goes on far too long of a tangent. Due to her weight and size, Valna does not hold alcohol well and gets drunk very quickly.

Likes & Dislikes

Valna's favourite colour is green, followed by brown, and she loves wearing her favourite colours. She enjoys archery, woodworking, reading, exploring, and most of all, telling other people about what she's learned in extreme detail. Her favourite creature is the unicorn, of which she wants to see and ride one. A more recent like of hers is visiting taverns with friends.

Valna's first and foremost dislike is when someone gets a fact wrong - she feels a strong need to correct them immediately. As someone who loves her friends dearly, Valna also strongly dislikes when her friends argue or get mad at each other. Another dislike of Valna's is when nature is damaged needlessly or without thought. She accepts that forests and habitats must be cleared on some level to feed people and provide homes, but only to a certain extent and preferably rebuilding the environment elsewhere.

Virtues & Personality perks

The long (relative to a human) life of an elf gives Valna a more relaxed perspective on the world. Minor issues don't trouble her, and she's perpetually cheery. Valna is very compassionate and forgiving towards people, so long as they haven't hurt her friends severely (emotionally or physically). She's very insightful, able to read other people very well, and often has useful advice for people that they rarely expect.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Aside from her immediate family, Valna knows most of the people from her small village in the High Forest, as well as several druids from the Circle of Wildfire that Altin joined. Valna doesn't have any contacts in Baldur's Gate. She knows several people inside Candlekeep, and can fairly easily find her way inside the library fortress. She is a member of the Ardent and knows many of the people employed by it.
"My name isn't 'Mister Dragon'!"
— Keshemir, also known as Mister Dragon

Family Ties

The second youngest of six children, Valna loves her family. She has a strong attachment to Altin in particular, and spends as much time with him as possible. Although it's difficult to keep in touch with the rest of the family in the High Forest, she visits them whenever she's able to.

Religious Views

Valna follows the Seldarine like most elves. Her preferred deity is Solonor Thelandira, the god of archery, hunting, and survival. She doesn't put too much importance on her religion, and is accepting of other pantheons.

Social Aptitude

Valna, despite her best efforts, was inept when it comes to her social aptitude. She enjoys conversations and talking, but didn't understand social cues most of the time. However, this has changed after spending several months with Akil Ecall, and some special help from Sariel Liadon and Nathxena Fey. Valna is now able to hold a conversation without making people cringe immediately. She's confident and extroverted, and will always volunteer to be the first one in anywhere.

Mannerisms

Valna loves talking about facts or general information, even if it's useless or only tangentially related to a subject. She doesn't know when to stop, and will only do so if asked or if she somehow runs out of facts to talk about. Valna is highly protective of her brother, and also protective of her friends. Despite being smaller than most, she'll often take to the front lines to protect others, even if they can handle themselves. Perpetually cheery, she's always optimistic about any situation she finds herself in.

History

Sariel and Valna first met in late 1492 DR when the latter signed up to join the nascent Ardent. Although Valna is over twice Sariel's age, the half-elf was much more experienced as an adventurer, having been involved in the events of Storm King's Thunder. Sariel took a liking to the wood elf when she first met her, and devoted time to training Valna.   Valna's skill lay in archery, and the two often practiced at night in the Ardeep Forest outside of Ardent Keep. While Sariel was an accomplished short-range archer, Valna quickly proved herself to be a masterful markswoman, hitting targets at extreme ranges with accuracy and power. Sariel has also attempted to teach Valna about various social skills, to surprising success.   Following the events involving the Ardent in 1493-94 DR, Sariel, Valna, and Nathxena Fey formed a semi-independent adventuring party called the Arrowheads.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Enna and Valna are both students of magic, and although Valna casts druidic magic, she is an expert on arcane theory. The two often have debates and discussions about the nature of magic and the planes. They also spar regularly, as both are accomplished swordswomen. Valna (with Sariel's help) has attempted to teach Enna about archery, to little success. This is due to Enna vastly preferring cantrips and spells to arrows.

History

Valna and Nathxena met as part of the Ardent. They remained acquaintances for many months, until Sariel Liadon invited the latter to archery practice with the former. Since then, Nathxena has been training Valna is several roguish techniques she has learned. In early 1494 DR, Valna, Nathxena, and Sariel formed the Arrowheads, and now often spend time adventuring together.

Nicknames & Petnames

Valna and Nathxena do not use nicknames for each other. They always refer to each other by their full first names.

Relationship Reasoning

Nathxena enjoys Valna's company due to her high competency, and the fact that Valna is the most genuinely nice person that Nathxena knows. Even though Nathxena doesn't have much tolerance for naivety, she makes an exception for Valna. Valna on the other hand simply enjoys being around Nathxena, who she considers fun to talk to and do activities with.

Commonalities & Shared Interests

Valna and Nathxena share a strong love of archery and the outdoors. They also enjoy reading, especially about survivalism and explorers, as well as going on hiking and camping trips together.

Shared Acquaintances

Sariel Liadon is the strongest shared acquaintance between the two, as she introduced them to each other. The three of them are also members of the Arrowheads and often adventure together. Enna Liadon and Emilia Leveva, also Arrowheads members, are two more close friends. Valna and Nathxena also maintain contact with the other former members of Beta Team, especially Altin Mellerelel, Valna's brother.

They stayed in an apartment in Baldur's Gate, venturing into the Cloakwood in between bouts of entering Candlekeep. Several years later, the two joined the Ardent mercenary company, and went on numerous adventures together, ending up saving Menzoberranzan from an invasion by devils.

After the Battle of Menzoberranzan, the two settled down in Waterdeep. Valna, along with Sariel Liadon and Nathxena Fey founded the Arrowheads. They opened a tavern in the Southern Ward of Waterdeep, and soon after, Altin opened an alchemy shop close by to keep an eye on his sister.

Growing up, Valna was inspired by her brother Perren's abilities as a ranger to become one herself. He helped train her over the decades whenever he was able to return home from patrols. Although Valna's path as a ranger differs from Perren's, her fighting style is still somewhat similar - preferring archery while mixing in blades and some amounts of magic. Description

Growing up in the High Forest, Valna learnt much about survival and archery from the famed wood elf rangers. After studying at Candlekeep for a few years, she also knows much about the planes and their inhabitants.

In combat, Valna will try to maintain as much distance from the enemy as possible, using her fast speed and ability to climb to its fullest extent. Against weaker enemies, she'll refrain from using resources and pepper them with long-range arrow fire. Against tougher opponents, she'll use haste and Nature's Veil to maximise how much damage she can do.

Ideals

"Knowing is half the battle, and I like winning!"

Bonds

"Nothing is more important to me than my brother."

Flaws

"Once you get me started on planar mechanics, I don't stop."

Special Equipment. Valna wears a set of +1 studded leather armor, a periapt of proof against poison, and a quiver of ehlonna (accounted for in her statistics). She wields autumn's sentinel, a longbow that can magically transform into a pair of swords. She carries an amulet of the planes, but typically is not attuned to it.
Fey Ancestry. Valna has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put her to sleep.
Mask of the Wild. Valna can attempt to hide even when she is only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.
Distant Strike. When Valna takes the Attack action, she can teleport up to 10 feet to an unoccupied space she can see before each attack.
Sneak Attack (1/turn). Valna deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage when she hits a target with a weapon attack and has advantage on the attack roll, or when the target is within 5 feet of an ally of Valna that isn't incapacitated and Valna doesn't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
Elven Accuracy. Whenever Valna has advantage on an attack roll using Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, she can reroll one of the dice once. In addition, attacking at long range doesn't impose disadvantage on her ranged attack rolls, and her ranged weapon attacks ignore half cover and three-quarters cover.
Spellcasting. Valna is a 6th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). She regains her expended spell slots when she finishes a long rest. She knows the following ranger spells:
Cantrips (at will): druidcraft
1st level (4 slots): absorb elements, cure wounds, detect magic, protection from evil and good, speak with animals
2nd level (3 slots): beast sense, misty step, lesser restoration, pass without trace, silence
3rd level (3 slots): haste, revivify, speak with plants

Actions

Multiattack. Valna makes three attacks with her Autumn’s Sentinel.
Autumn’s Sentinel (Ranged). Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) piercing damage, plus 4 (1d8) force damage.
Autumn’s Sentinel (Melee). Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6 + 5) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) force damage.
Tireless (Recharge 6). Valna gains 1d8+4 temporary hit points.

Bonus Actions

Sentinel Swap. Valna switches autumn’s sentinel between its ranged and melee configurations.
Cunning Action. Valna takes the Dash, Disengage, or Hide action.
Steady Aim. Valna gives herself advantage on her next attack roll on the current turn. She can use this bonus action only if she hasn't moved during this turn, and after she uses the bonus action, her speed is 0 until the end of the current turn.
Nature’s Veil (3/day). Valna turns invisible until the start of her next turn.
Ethereal Step (Recharges on a Short Rest). Valna casts the etherealness spell on herself without expending a spell slot. The spell ends at the end of her turn.

Reactions

Skirmisher. When an enemy ends its turn within 5 feet of Valna, she can move up to half her speed as a reaction. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks.
