Session 8: Cauldron Bubble
General Summary
(Note: Written many weeks after the fact. For that reason, it is not very detailed, and some things will have been forgotten).
Our heroes delve deeper into the network of caves. Not far into the caves, they encounter a frozen waterfall. While attempting to climb it, Shest falls and breaks part of the ice, releasing a water weird. The party deals with this threat quickly.
After further exploration, the party encounters an old lady stirring an enormous cauldron of stew. She welcomes the party to her home and offers them some stew. Unfortunately, it is readily apparent from the body parts nearby that the stew's content is the fishermen from Easthaven that the party is attempting to track down. The old lady is, in fact, Maud Chiselbone, a lake hag. When confronted with her crimes, she becomes violent and attacks the party. It does not take long to defeat her and her will-o-wisp companion.
Disgusted by the fate of the fishermen, our heroes tip over the cauldron and empty it of stew. Upon further examination, it appears this is a cauldron of plenty, a valuable artifact that can provide food on demand. The party decide to take it to Bryn Shander, not wanting it in the hands of anyone in Easthaven and "that place is dodgy."
But first, they finish exploring the caves. They discover a frozen pool with the bodies of four frost giants within the ice. In another cavern, they find cave paintings depicting giants drowning themselves in a pool to honour some form of deity. Finally, they discover the remains of an abandoned camp. A journal in Dwarvish chronicles an explorer's journey to the caves and their findings, including mention of the lake hag. Presumably, this poor unfortunate also ended up in the stew at some point.
After some help from Lirin casting Tenser's Floating Disk, the party manages to maneuver the cauldron out of the caves and onto the back of Buddy the Mule. Our heroes travel to Bryn Shander and to The Northlook to entrust the cauldron to Scramsax, figuring that he could make use of its powers. Scramsax insists on informing Speaker Duvessa Shane, who thanks the party for entrusting the cauldron to Bryn Shander, and agrees that Scramsax should look after it for the time being.
