Chapter 48: A Way Out
General Summary
Date: 8th of Uktar, 1491 DR
In the dark forest of the Shadowfell, pursued by a relentless pack of undead, the party fended for themselves on a forest clearing. As the battle ensued, a familiar figure emerged from the twisted trees – Bene. Together, they faced off the relentless horde, bringing them down swiftly. When the battle was over, the party went over their plan to escape the Realm of Shadows. Bene prayed to Mask and in the secluded glade, shadows coalesced into a single spot. Mask, answering to Bene's plea, revealed a dormant Shadow Crossing, a gateway to escape the Shadowfell. This option however would transfer the party thousands of miles away from the Savage Frontier. Mask presented another choice: to save time, the party could go through a Domain of Dread, Darkon. Unwilling to remain shackled by the Shadowfell, the party hesitated. Nomime, summoned the captured Dao and bargained for its help to open a rift to Ascore, the party's desired destination. The Dao agreed but demanded freedom in return. In agreement, the party headed west toward the Lost Lake. Along their journey, the party ate some Meazle, wraiths ambushed them, and Belros encountered a lost child during his watch, who left him a token of appreciation for caring for her. Guided by Bene's natural instincts, they stealthily passed a werewolf and a zombie hill giant. Upon reaching the lake, they were at a loss on how to cross to the central island. With some thought, Nomime transformed Belros into a Giant Eagle, and together they soared towards the island. As they soared above the lake, they saw a colossal creature emerging from the lake, attacking Bene and Ranvas. The Shadow Hydra snapped it's multiple jaws towards the two. Ranvas was swallowed while Bene found himself in the clutches of the monster. Belros and Nomime landed, and began trading blows with the Hydra. Belros was flung to the lake while Nomime summoned a Water Elemental to aid in the battle. Amidst the chaos, Belros stabbed the Hydra's back, unleashing a holy smite that annihilated the creature from within. The creature fell to the shallow water while Belros's sword began to drink it's blood. With the threat vanquished, the party reached the island, uncovering the tomb that contained the dormant Shadow Crossing. As the Dao opened the rift, a chilling disturbance rattled the sarcophagi, awakening a horde of undead. With little time to spare, the party dove through the crossing, navigating through a surreal expanse of black sludge until they emerged in the arid desert of Anauroch, leaving the Plane of Shadows behind. How much time has really passed during their weeks of adventure in Shadowfell? What malevolent forces lurk within the hags' lair, and can the party navigate the perilous web of illusions to rescue Andrew before it's too late?Rewards Granted
