Death That Follows Death. Report
General Summary
The Mist Walkers scour the Village Of Barovia and try to remedy what ails the dour town
While the rest of the Mist Walkers travel the Slavich Woods back to the Village Of Barovia Azakel begins looking for work. In the Blood Of The Vine Tavern he meets an uncommon man named Ismark Indirovich whom is looking for help burying his recently deceased father. Azakel agrees for fair pay. On their way out of the tavern the two encounter the rest of the party and both catch each other up. Here Bearn is able to sell the wine he was able to get from Lady Morwen.
The Mist Walkers take corpse of Kolyan Indirovich north to the Church Of The Morninglord and request a burial from Father Donavich. He however is secluded and unhelpful. Ismark Indirovich confirms that there has been no actual burial of individuals within the last year. However the priest does not stop them from using his land or tools. The party finds recently used shovels and bury the previous Burgomaster.
Returning to the Kolyana Manor the party encounters Strahd Von Zarovich whom claims he has come to pay respects to his dear Ireena's father his condelences and as a courtesy offer his hand in marriage to her a third time. He introduces himself cordially to the party and welcomes them to Barovia. He then makes his exit leaving behind a chalice he was drinking from. Sabrina confirms the contents to be blood. Ireena Kolyana Indirovich is very upset an angry.
Ismark Indirovich requests that the source of a plague that is causing many Barovians to die and come back as a Zombies be located and eradicated. The party steadily clears the town of all undead and it's source.
Every week for the past year, a villager has gone missing without an explanation. While he was alive, the disappearances plagued the village’s previous burgomaster, Kolyan Indrovich. Now that Kolyan is dead, the problem of the missing villagers falls squarely into the lap of his son and successor, Ismark “The Lesser” Kolyanovich. When Ismark first meets the adventurers, he will ask them to look into the matter of the missing villagers. He tells them that the villagers believe the disappearances to be the work of The Devil Strahd, but he thinks that the cause may be closer to home. Should the party succeed in finding the cause of the disappearances, Ismark will deem them worthy of escorting his sister to the safety of St. Andral’s church in the town of Vallaki.Ismark is correct to think that the cause of the disappearances
is within the village. Once a week, the priest Donavich lures a villager into the church on false pretenses, and feeds them to his son Doru. Doru’s arrival at the church a year ago broke something inside of Donavich. He locked his monstrous son away in the church’s undercroft and set about praying for a miracle. After many fruitless prayer sessions, Donavich’s mind finally cracked under the pressure. Instead of listening to his son scream, “Father I’m starving!” over and over, Donavich decided that he would do what all good parents do: make sure that their child has enough to eat. That decision drove Donavich to lure the first villager into the church as a bloodmeal for his son. A week ater, screams of “Father, I’m starving!” started up again, and another villager was lured back to the church’s undercroft. Both bodies were buried by Donavich in the graveyard behind the church. After a period of several weeks, the villagers became frightened by the disappearances, and refused to go out after dark. This forced Donavich to be clever and use the trust the villagers had in him against them. Quick words,
quicker thinking, and the occasional blow to the head are what Donavich uses to keep his son fed these days. The latest victim was Gregor Stanovich, a devout follower of the Morninglord. Donavich entered his house under the guise of a private prayer session. When Donavich tried to lure Gregor to the church, Gregor refused. Eventually, a struggle ensued and Gregor hit Donavich with a candlestick and ripped off the priest’s holy symbol. Donavich managed to knock the older man unconscious and drag him to the church under the cover of darkness.
Once every few weeks an old woman, named Morgantha comes to the village and sells Dream Pastries that the locals go wild for. They say it helps people sleep through the night and have pleasant dreams. Morgantha gives everyone one free pastry. She knows people will return to buy more.
The Party confronts Father Donavich and find out about Doru. Donavich confesses his sins and begs for help to save Doru. The party decides to attempt to take him nonviolently by taking the dream pastries and hoping the sedative effect will work if diluted in animal blood. IT works and they tie Doru up. Azakel wishes to find a way to cure his Vampirism whereas everyone else determines best method would be executing him. In a desperate attempt Azakel seeks help from a man named Vasili Von Holtz, a Vallaki noble who offers to take Doru and experiment on him to find a cure. The party decides to not trust this man and take Doru to the Ivlis River delta and us the running water to dissolve him alive, this process is not slow.
Returning to Ismark Indirovich at his manor he had been talking to Father Donavich and decides to allow him to operate like he had been normally up to now. Ismark determines it would be too much of a psychological blow to the people of Village Of Barovia to know that their last bastion of hope was killing it's people. He will tell people that everyone who has gone missing has emmigrated to Krezk.
That night Azakel has a nightmare. In this nightmare a prime evil voice asks him to be their champion and offer power in return.
