Fennengath

Created by

Fennengath is a continent fully surrounded by seas, thought to have been isolated for nearly a millenium. There are seven nations on the continent; Dunwichia, Durtalbachland, Erinia, Hasbachland, Tigue, Yangjuguk, and Yeon.   Legends and myths vary by region, but most historians agree that each nation, apart from Durtalbachland, was founded simultaneously by travelers stranded by numerous shipwrecks after a horrific storm that spanned the entire continent a thousand years ago. It is debated just how inhabited the continent was before this storm, but little evidence has ever been found to prove any theory.   Today, ships that leave the coastal waters surrounding the continent rarely return, and when they do, they often return on the winds, no sailor or passenger aboard. Occasionally some are found as burned out husks, washed ashore, still with no life though some of these at least contain bodies that can be sent home. The reasons why these ships don't survive are unclear. Some say the deep waters are cursed by the gods, others swear the fabled storm swallowed the rest of the world and left Fennengath the only safe haven in the storm's unmoving eye. A few believe that the outside world is either so great or so terrible that those who successfully leave can never return, while most simply believe the various peoples of Fennengath have forgotten how to build ships that can survive sailing vast oceans. But the continent is vast too, and most nations are welcoming, so few people seek to leave the relatively safe and diverse lands, even when they need to reinvent themselves.   Some people fear beasts above all else, and some fear magic, while others try to tame them. But many still know that man is the most monstrous creature of all. Wars have raged in Fennengath over the course of the first millennium, some short and forgotten, some lasting centuries and spoiling as much blood as they spilled. Now is a time of supposed peace between the nations, if not a time of trust. Peace, however, cannot be promised on the road.   While many adventurers roam the lands of Fennengath, so do numerous creatures. Some are said to have lived here before the storm, some are known to have come with those who landed on the shores, and a few beasts of myth, not seen for centuries, are said to have been created by the storm itself.   Nations and their provinces, cities, and smaller communities are the primary form of governance and social structure throughout the land. However, there are organizations where loyalties bond people together stronger than those of borders, race, or kin. Those loyalties may belong to schools, religions, or guilds, some of which span the entire continent. But that does not mean that there are no secrets in Fennengath.
