At its core, Arcane Magic is nothing more than a duel between the will and knowledge of the individual against the Natural Order, which role is to reverse the changes in the Weave.
This duel is based on forcing a change in a particular law of physics, nature, biology, chemistry etc. in the object, or space of the mage's choice.
No change can be applied to inexistent factors in Weave.
This change, called a spell, requires contact through the Weave to impose one's will with the use of mana. Distance weakens the contact.
Mana is a finite resource anchored in and defined for each living soul.
In the context of Arcana, the soul is the source of the will that maintains and shapes the mana in the magician. Addendum: This law can be altered by entities of demigod or higher status in cosmic hierarchy.
While body movements help with imagination and verbal chants can contain calculations, both can be omitted with sufficient familiarity with the cast spell.
Parts of the spell can be done with external tools to reduce the cost of mana.
The spell consumes the mage's mana in the amount proportional to the area covered, level of change and duration.
The same effect can often be achieved with less mana by making appropriate use of the pull of Natural Order.
The amount of mana consumed can be reduced by offering a valuable gem to Meral.
