Dragonstones
For most people in the world today, magic is a rare sight, and magical ability rarer still. However, the dragonborn interact with magic on a very nearly daily basis, and that is entirely thanks to the existence of the Dragonstones.
The Dragonstones are ancient magical artifacts, created by dragons and dragonborn magicians with the last reserves of their magic after the Great Arcane Cataclysm. Each Dragonstone stores a magnificent amount of power, which dragonborn in the Post-Arcane Era draw on to power their magical draconic traits, such as their breath weapons and a various of magical abilities which are much more common than in any others species on the planet, apart from gnomes.
As a somewhat secretive people, the dragonborn have never made the knowledge of exactly how many Dragonstones there are, and their true locations, fully known. In practice, there are at least seven known stones, with at least one residing in each of the seven Great Dragon Halls. However, in most of the Great Dragon Halls, very few individuals are ever allowed to look upon the stones, and there may yet be others in unknown locations, hidden in other parts of the world.
Despite the tendency towards secrecy and aggressive security, a few of the Halls have their Dragonstones on some kind of display, where a larger number of people are invited to look at them. The following stones are documented, and most are kept on prominent display.
The Ruby Dragonstone
The Ruby Stone resides in the Hall of Brass and Ruby, in the Desert Coast region. It is an eight-foot tall ruby in the shape of a pillar, rooted in a bed of sandstone. It is on display in the central chamber of the Parliament of Brass and Ruby, though it is almost constantly guarded by a team of elite soldiers. The Ruby Stone appears to glow from within, and many who have spent time with the stone report seeing flickering shapes like that of dancing flames within it. It is therefore unsurprising that the stone is often associated with fire breathing and flame magic, though of course, this is not universal. The Ruby Stone is one of the few Dragonstones that has never been kept hidden from the public; in fact, is has been on display in the Hall of Brass and Ruby since the Great Arcane Cataclysm.
