The Sunless Citadel

Nestled deep within the heart of a foreboding ravine, the Sunless Citadel looms as a haunting testament to a forgotten age. Its name derived from the ominous absence of sunlight that penetrates its depths, this ancient fortress is a place of mystery and danger. The dilapidated stone walls and crumbling structures hint at a grandeur lost to time, while twisted vegetation and malevolent creatures that dwell within its chambers testify to its sinister nature. Legends speak of a fabled tree at its core, known as the Gulthias Tree, whose cursed fruit holds a terrible power. Adventurers brave enough to venture into the Sunless Citadel navigate treacherous corridors, dodge traps, and confront monstrous adversaries as they seek both riches and answers hidden within its shadowy confines.

Purpose / Function

The Sunless Citadel, in its inception, served as a stronghold dedicated to Ashardalon, the fearsome red dragon of legend, and his malevolent cult. Designed as a bastion of power and a focal point for their dark rituals, the citadel was an imposing monument to Ashardalon's dominion and the spread of his influence. Within its ominous halls, the cultists conducted vile rites, channeling dark magic and offering sacrifices to their draconic master. The structure itself, intricately crafted with arcane symbols and dragon motifs, reflected the awe-inspiring might of Ashardalon and his followers. Over time, the citadel became a place of dread and malevolence, its walls resonating with echoes of ancient sorcery and the lingering presence of the dragon's corrupting influence. During the Great War, this citadel served as a stronghold for the evil forces, often carrying out attacks on nearby cities and villages.

Alterations

After the war, the fate of the Sunless Citadel took an unexpected turn as it was deliberately cast deep into the earth by a powerful mage hailing from the Arcane Order. Buried and hidden from sight, the citadel gradually faded from the collective memory, becoming a mere whisper of the past. Locals in the vicinity referred to it as the "creepy ravine," unaware of the formidable structure concealed beneath the surface. Over time, nature exerted its influence, enveloping the citadel with overgrown vegetation and veiling it in an air of mystery. Forgotten by most, the once-feared stronghold transformed into an enigma, its true nature waiting to be rediscovered by intrepid adventurers or those who stumble upon its hidden secrets.
