Knight

A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state or representative for service to the monarch or the country, especially in a military capacity. While considered a noble title, knighthood is not hereditary, though the child of a knight is very likely to be given the title as well once they come of age and have proven themself. Knights, like baronets, are considered lesser nobility and are not a member of the peerage, though unlike baronets, knighthood rarely comes with more land than the knight's own residence. Knighthood is a primarily military title, and knights are required to take up arms to defend their lord or in response to a call to war.

Methods of Address

A male knight is addressed as "Sir [name]" and a female knight is addressed as "Dame [name]" regardless of context. Alternatively, a knight could also be addressed as "Master/Mistress [surname]," but this is typically reserved for the children of a knight.
The wife of a knight would be addressed "Lady [surname]" regardless of context. Husbands of knights are addressed as "Mr. [surname]," receiving none of the courtesies of the spouse's honor.

Requirements

Must have reached the age of majority. This is largely by human standards, so a dwarf or elf not yet considered an adult by their own people may still be considered old enough to receive the title from a human lord. Shorter lived races such as an Aarakocra would need to be the age of majority for its people.

Appointment

Typically, a knight would be raised by the lord or lady he or she will be serving. A duke could raise a knight and put them in service of a count, but a count could not raise a knight and place them in service of another count or higher rank. This was done typically when the newly appointed knight earned the honor of having a sovereign conduct the ceremony but lived on the land of a lesser noble.

Duties

Defend the lands, people, and personage of their lord.

Benefits

Housing, salary, and basic equipment would be supplied to a knight by the lord they are sworn to. The upkeep of land and equipment would fall to the knight. A lord would not be required to provide this if they are too poor to do so, though a knight would be less likely to serve one who could not.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

Failure to uphold their oath to serve and protect or bringing shame and dishonor to their liege lord can result in a knight being stripped of their title and dishonored. It is incredibly unlikely for a knight to be raised again at a later time should this occur.
