Kellin Halkirk

King of Arms Kellin Halkirk

Today, as a man, I grieve the deaths of my wife and daughter. As a Taalorang, I grieve the deaths of our empress and the crown princess. As a human, I grieve the continuation of violence and fear that plagues our kind. Our nation has been thrown into chaos, and darkness clouds the sun. I feel the fear and doubt that fills your hearts, but the empire we have built is not so weak that it crumbles the instant it loses its head. Villains have slain our empress and our princess, but I have received word that her son yet lives. The chain of the Tamba dynasty is not broken, and until he can arrive to take the reigns, I am still your emperor and I will not let this empire fall into chaos. Yes, let us grieve today, but it is the loss of two women we are mourning, not the loss of our empire.
— King of Arms Halkirk, in a formal address from the palace the day after the assassination of Empress Pellye
Kellin Halkirk is a popular figure in the Taalorang Empire. Originally from Mangzmat, he joined the military as a young man and rose through the ranks thanks to his equal skills with a sword and with strategy. When he was a Ganrin (the highest rank in the military), he wed Empress Pellye shortly after her coronation. This made him the emperor, and the commander of the entire military.   Halkirk had one child with Pellye, a girl named Serri. Serri had a close relationship with her father, and when she and Pellye were both killed in an assassination, he was devastated. Halkirk took control of the empire for a few months after the assassination. Pellye's son from the king of Mangzmat was badly injured in the attack and had to remain in the care of a local doctor before being fit enough to return to the capital, Temru.   The coronation of the proper emperor was met with general dissatisfaction among the populace. Halkirk's title of emperor was replaced with King of Arms now that there was an emperor regnant, and he returned to commanding only the military, with no formal input on state affairs. The general impression, though, was that he had been a very good emperor in the interim, and certainly much better than Laeken, who was very young and inexperienced.   There's plenty of grumbling throughout the empire that Halkirk should have just remained the emperor, which he always deflects with a smile. He is supporting of his wife's son, and only wishes it offer him support in growing into an emperor that can fill his mother's shoes.   In truth, Halkirk desires the throne above all else. His relationship with Laeken is antagonistic at best, and downright spiteful and cruel at worst. They both maintain a public facade of working together swimmingly, because Laeken doesn't dare invite the public outcry of firing such a beloved figure.

History

Laeken never got along well with Kellin during his visits to Temru as a child. Once he lived there permanently, he confirmed his opinion of Kellin as a cold, unfriendly man. After his mother died and he took the throne, Kellin became keen to seize power for himself and frequently tries to undermine Laeken's authority.
