ToD: Session 86: Flame's Final Embrace

General Summary

After the party had their meeting with Bahamut they decided to take a short rest before going to the volcano. As they approached the volcano their vission became limited as the smog came down from the caldera of the volcano. They saw muktiple bonfires with dragon eyes following them as they continued walking. Eventually they approached the foot of the volcano where they saw a group of undead guarding a cave opening. First Vox tried to sneak trough but she got spotted by the eye, they then decided to attack the group but when Leo came closer they lowered their weapons and they were let trough saying: "The holder has arrived".
The party then walked trough the lava tunnels and eventually arrived at the Caldera of the volcano, where they saw bones of dragon's and people laying about. As they stepped in they saw the walls light up and saw skeletons banging golden drums with dragon flame eyes. They continued walking and saw the bones a dragon lying in the center of this area, and on a pile of gold a throne where Leo's brother sat. As they approached the bones came to live and started attacking the party. It began to speak saying:

"Welcome back, my eternal prison. Did you discover any respite out there?" "Soon, I will have a taste of freedom, while you remain here, decaying and powerless."

It used a petrifying breath that almost turned some of the party to stone, and the fight ended rather quickly as they continued to hear the voice:

"Thinking you've defeated me already? That was merely a taste; the real challenge awaits. Your brother now adorns my throne, his lifeless form decaying and staring into the nothingness of death. Soon, you will take his place as my most precious treasure."

From the lava they saw a bony claw appear, slowly reavealing the gargantuan form of Charthraxis The Deathless. Its wings dripping with lava and his body alight with a bright lit crimson flame. It started by breathing its Dragon's Breath which almost downed some of the party in an instant but with the blessing from Bahamut some members took less damage. They continued to fight him and the animated corpse of Joshua who started to attack Leo first. As the battle continued with Sidon almost down and Sun having summoned a Hexton who started to counterspell all posible magic that appeared. Eventually Sun shot down the Undeath beast and they heard him one last time:

"When I fall, remember this: I'll rise again, and again, as long as you're being remains. You may celebrate now, but know that true victory eludes you. With each resurrection, my shadow grows longer, and your hope dims. The cycle will continue until you are no more than a pawn in my endless game."

Leo then realized he is the phylactry, the thing that keeps the soul from dying. And that to destroy it, he needs to kill himself. He dropped his items, and picked up Joshua who laid there lifeless and tried to jump into the lava, but Bahamut intervened and truned the lava to stone saying that this would not work. After this the party looted the pile of gold.
