Meridian (Me-ri-dee'an)

Meridian is the Capital city of the Meridian Confederacy. This city sprawls across a coast and up a river. The city is mostly a merchant center with government offices and the seat of power of all the nation. The city is rich in heritage and home to many kings of the past. Meridian remains one of the oldest cities on Niith and has been hailed as the birthplace for the New Age of Enlightenment. Being a majority port city, this city sees many cultures from across the world, from nearly all the continents. For this reason, the city has become a melting pot of cultures and one of the richest cities upon Niith and Gaia alone.   There was some history referring to Piracy as well. Back in the days of Imperialism, piracy was rampant in the city, Though in the end, Law and Order reigned, and Meridian became one of the most stabilized nations of Gaia. It unified Kingdoms of Old under their banner and together they march on forward into an unknown future.

Government

Traditionally they city's government lays in the power of the King, Who is more of a figurehead than a political person these days. Though he has major sway over how politics play in the city, the true power rests as a Democractic Oligarchy amongst the nation's Noble Houses. The Nation of Meridian has been formed of powerful families who in turn elected the king, turning this into a Elective Monarchy.  Though this practice has fallen subtle, the monarch at times can be hereditary or in the end elected by the House Lords.   Each House has a set number of citizens, they are allowed to speak and elect decisions their house lords make. Even though the practice could so obviously be rigged, history dictated this was not the case. Making these Houses very trustworthy. If a rouge house tried to seize power, it was quickly shut down in a combined effort of the ruling Oligarchy.   Not everyone is a member of the noble houses though. They can still however voice their concerns to an Alderman that the house installed in regions of their respective lands. Each Month on the first day, the Houses hold Town meeting halls to discuss the future, this is the prime soapbox for people to voice concerns or praises to the Houses in running the country and their cities.

Architecture

Even though the city is stoked in history of massive castles and medieval towns. The nation and the city in particular have modernized naturally to the modern world. The Old City, is protected by laws that are aimed to keep the nation's historical identity relevant and present for the future generations to see. The New City has more modern buildings and is divided by the ancient city walls that once surrounded the original settlement. The city has about there or four high rise buildings that could be counted as skyscrapers, but the city tried to keep an agrarian legacy alive.   The Stone buildings have been renovated to fit in modern electricity and piping, though this project cost a lot of money, it was finally completed 30 years after it started. Most people would rather live in the country side, but those within the city feel at home with the new technology that once was seen as impossible.
