Arlene Plateborn
Arlene Plateborn
She was close with her sister Olvari Plateborn.
Arlene Plateborn was a woman of grit and determination, born into a proud lineage of miners who had worked their own quarry in the Black Barrow region for generations. Her bronze-brown hair was always tied back with a leather strap, streaked with silver from years of hard work under the unforgiving sun. With strong arms and weathered hands, she took over the Plateborn quarry when her parents died and held it together with sheer willpower. There wasn’t much softness about Arlene, but there was a strength that others admired. When she married Caldur "One-Eye" Graybore, they found common ground in their hard pasts and mutual respect for the land and their labour.
Caldur wandered into a forbidden forest grove one night when Arlo was around fifteen.
Raising Arlo on her own after Caldur’s disappearance, Arlene bore the weight of both mother and father, teaching her son the craft of the stone and the pride of their family legacy. The quarry was everything to her, and she worked it even when the weather turned against them. In the late 4th Era, torrential rains loosened the rocks and caused a landslide, trapping Arlene beneath the rubble as she worked late into the night, alone. It was Arlo who found her body the next morning. Her death shook the young dwarf to his core, and he buried her in the very quarry she had dedicated her life to, marking her grave in the mudpits of Black Barrow. Her passing marked the end of an era for the Plateborn quarry, and its closure followed soon after.
