Kattagari

Kattagari is the largest settlement on the isle of Luu and a major manufacturing hub of the Drembari Isles.
Kattagari

Demographics

Kattagari has three primary sections:
  • Tummu's Hammer: Named after the goddess of the forge, Tummu, this forms the administrative heart of the city. Government buildings are here, as well as prominent trading houses and banks.
  • The Boil: The most noticeable feature of this area is a lake of molten lava, surrounded by a cracked and shifting magma field. Residence in this section is a risky proposition, but--either due to finances or thrill-seeking--a good deal of Kattagarans call it home.
  • Ashdowns: A catch-all term for anything that isn't on the Hammer or in the Boil, Ashdown features most of the workshops and artisan organizations in the city.

Government

Like most other inhabited places in the Isles, Luu is managed by a Waterspeaker, currently Verkuth Darrik. Since Kattagari is the largest settlement on the Isle, by far, it de facto determines the government of the Isle. The Waterspeaker is elected by popular vote and overseen by by a "Lava Circle," another elected body.    The people of Kattagari--and Luu--pride themselves on their system of direct democracy.

Industry & Trade

Most of those who live in Kattagari are of two professions--either craftspeople or merchants. Sometimes both.   The biggest industry is the mining and shaping of obsidian. Considered a gift from Tummu by the Luuan people, every kind of object, tool, and weapon imaginable is crafted using this sharp lava rock.    There is also a brisk trade in asakori whale oil, especially around The Boil. The sicky-sweet smell of oil refinement can sometimes permeate the air. Locals call that the smell of coin.

Geography

It is impossible to talk about Kattagari--or Luu, for that matter--without talking about lava. The entire Isle is suffused with it and that becomes readily apparent in Kattagari. The walls are made of a combination of ashmud and obsidian. The Boil itself is a lava pit that changes, seemingly, with the tides. Outside the walls, there is the Black Walk--an area of igneous rock formations that extend deeper into the Isle, to the very shores of the titular volcanic lake of Luu.
