Imperial Federation of Novaris

The Imperial Federation of Novaris was formed in 1848 when its colonial viceroy staged a coup together with the military in the colony. To many this did not come as a surprise however, as it ‘attracted’ two types of people from its early days as a colony.   Being on the much harder to navigate West Coast the lands of Novaris only saw its first colonists in the late 17th century. Many of these colonists were either the more daring explorers and colonists, or those dissatisfied with colonial governance in other colonies. The majority were Eldonians, however many under private charters with dubious intends of claiming the lands ‘for the crown’.   When Eldonia noticed this development and feared the loss of control over these new lands, it put a tremendous emphasis on stimulating loyal subjects to settle these lands. Government advisors noted however that enthusiasm was lacking, and recommended establishing penal colonies along the coast instead. And so a rapid colonization of the Sinisterran West Coast started in 1736 with a significant military presence that could also pull the other colonies back in line.   As such a much more authoritarian form of governance was established on the West Coast and the colonies saw disorder like no other. Violence and conflict were limited within its borders however, as colonists mostly tried to establish settlements and trade away from government eyes and interference. Conflict was plentiful though with the native inhabitants of the West Coast of Sinisterra. The military authorities being used to harsh treatment of their own population, treated the Sinisterra natives similarly if not even more harshly. Today the authorities that now rule Novaris still maintain a hostile stance towards the original native population.   The gap between the population and colonial government grew as the people felt more and more oppressed. In a final attempt to restore order and appease the population, the Eldonian government appointed Alexander Whitmore as colonial viceroy in 1844. Originally of common birth and born in the colony, Whitmore had gained experience in governance as long serving representative in multiple states’ legislative assemblies. Though Whitmore was known as supporting some republican ideologies, he was also well known and popular amongst the population. The monarchy took a risk, but felt they would keep Whitmore in line by appointing a military nobleman as his senior advisor. Unknowingly to the government back home, Whitmore convinced his senior advisor, General Horatio Channing, of a more popular and less oppressive form of governance that was not in accordance with directives set out by the crown. Before the crown was properly informed, Whitmore had gained so much support for his manner of government that it was too late to intervene and get him back in line. By 1848 it became clear Whitmore and Channing had been planning a coup for the people all along and war broke out.   Although formally still at war, hostilities on land in the colonies ceased by 1853. Whitmore was assassinated soon after however. Channing, after his death in late 1853, got a replaced by a new popular general, Percival Fortescue, who then saw his opportunity to cease absolute power. Today the Imperial Federation of Novaris is still ruled by Fortescue as its absolute leader.
