Personal history
Derick was born as the second child of the reigning Emperor of Brekar in the summer of 312 FO. He grew up in an initially sheltered environment, but it could not hold his hot-headed temperament for long. At a young age, he started training as a warrior, since as a second child, he was not in line to be emperor in the event of his father's death or resignation. He rose in strength as time went on, becoming an incredibly accomplished and well-trained warrior, even swearing a Paladin Oath to Pelor to protect his family and his people. His great skill and strength combined with his fervent devotion even led him to become the Champion of Pelor, earning him several powerful magical items.
At the height of his strength, the ambitious lich Vecna returned to the Material Plane to ascend to godhood and subjugate the plane and its people to his will. He began his ritual in the city that would become Waylon's Keep after the Thronetaker's War. Derick, upholding his oath, ventured to the ritual site and did battle with Vecna, severing the lich's eye and hand in the process. With his last breath, Pelor gifted his champion new vigor to finally defeat Vecna. Derick became an aasimar and healed his wounds, though failed to slay Vecna before his ascent. He was able to banish him, however, and that banishment still holds today. After the battle, he was renowned as a hero for his banishment of the aspiring God.
Years later, when his eldest brother was set to be coronated, he instead abdicated the throne to Derick, believing him more fit to rule, especially with his Champion status. He ruled until he died, producing further heirs to lead the empire, and allowing aasimar blood to flow through the branch of royal blood that would continue to rule the empire until Emperor Lysander's final decree.
A statue of Derick in his angelic form with his magical artifacts can still be found in the city center of Waylon's Keep. His body is buried in the Hall of Emperors, the holy tomb beneath Waylon's Keep that holds the bodies of every Brekarian emperor.
