Fridians

The Fridians were a civilisation of city-states centred around the Sélmara, whose modern name derives from the Fridian "zēlmer"; at its greatest extent it covered the Baluarte Peninsula and most of Elicia. It was one of the earliest litterate cultures of Eussis, and had a great deal of influence on the Vallaran and later Varaso civilisation that would succeed it. The earliest material evidence of the culture dates from around the 2nd century, but their written records begin to appear in the 4th. It was eventually absorbed into the early Varaso Kingdom, and the Fridians would dissolve into the Varasos over the course of 12th and 13th centuries.

Name

The term "Fridian" comes from the Vallaran "fridius, -ii", which was used to refer to the people. The Fridians did not view themselves as a monolithic culture or people, and would more often associate themselves with the city-state they belonged to, but did nonetheless recognise that they shared a language and general culture, and were otherwise distinct from other people groups, and referred to themselves as "ΩƏΦLN/ƣ̇ꝺφլ̖η" (wheptlin).
