Varasos

The Varasos are a group of people native to the areas that were the Varaso Empire who primarily speak Varaso.

History

The Varasos descended from an ancient Vallaran group centred around Varas. Through the late second and third eras they rapidly expanded outwards, subjugating and absorbing the neighbouring Elicic peoples, Fridians, Cassidians, and Karanesians, many of whom would eventually assimilate into Varaso society and disappear.

Naming Conventions

Varasos continue to use a form of the tria nomina in use since Vallaran records begin in the mid-first millennium, though the status of the three names has changed. Originally the first name, the praenomen was a person's given name, the second, the nomen, was their family name, and the third, the cognomen was a sort of nickname or second given name. Some people had multiple cognomia. Over time the cognomen became heritable as a sort of second family name, which could often indicate a branch of a larger family or dynasty. Eventually the conhome, as it became, became the family name and the nome became another given name, largely overtaking the prenome. When referred to in a binomial fashion, both earlier Vallarans and later Varasos are referred to by their second and third names, though when referred to mononymously, Vallarans are generally referred to by their cognomen while Varasos are referred to by their nome.
