Snuffers' Society

The Snuffers' Society is a decentralised activist group that can be found throughout Syvat, that focuses on access to education and the sharing of "dangerous" information. Members — known as Snuffers — typically meet in small bands to share books and resources, and plan educational programs to teach skills to the less fortunate. There are few branches of the Snuffers left throughout Syvat.

History

The Snuffers' Society was originally founded in retaliation to the rise in station of the Cult of the Candlekeeper, a sect within the Church of Eighteen Eyes that venerated Old Lady Loom's aspect of the Candlekeeper. This Cult exerted political pressure within the Vekhen Empire to have education significantly restricted, and countless books banned. The Snuffers were formed to illicitly share such banned works and attempt to protect books from being burned.   Though the Society never formally disbanded — as it never formally was founded — its membership dwindled after the fall of the Candlekeepers and the revocation of their conservative laws regarding books and education. Those few branches that remained were no longer considered outlaws, and ultimately without a clear enemy or mission, the branches became the purview of bored middle-class patrons as opposed to strict activism. Some few branches remain, though they are mostly social clubs now.   The Snuffers' have seen a resurgence within the Gol-Kasha town of Zhilisky in direct opposition to the Brotherhood of Autumn. These new Snuffers' previously used the estate of Yoan Popov to congregate and plan, though that arrangement has since ended with the burning of his home. The Snuffers' are now scattered, attempting to resist the Brotherhood where they can.
