High Marshal

The High Marshal is the supreme commander of the Holy Legions, chosen by The Gold Emperor. They spend most of their time in Aurumis coordinating the legion and organizing recruitment. The High Marshal fights in the greatest and most important wars, often as advisor to or proxy for the Gold Emperor himself.

Qualifications

Most High Marshals have served as marshal of one of the legions for years and commander before then. They are the epitome of what all legionaries aspire to be.

Appointment

When the previous High Marshal dies, or the Gold Emperor elects to depose them, the Gold Emperor chooses a new High Marshal. This is normally done with great pomp and ceremony, with the High Marshal swearing their oath of office in the Copper Cathedral of Aurumis. There have been times however, such as during crisis, where High Marshals have simply sworn an oath to the Emperor and then been crowned.

Duties

The High Marshal is the spiritual leader of the Legions and sets the tone for how the legions operate. A High Marshal from the Legion of Conquest may prioritize expanding the Legion Fleet to conquer new lands for the Empire, while a High Marshal from the Legion of Devotion may prioritize recruitment and training of new legionaries to protect the provinces of the Empire.

Responsibilities

The High Marshal is in charge of the administration of the Legions and leading them to war.

History

When the Holy Legions began to grow during the early days of the Gold Empire, the Emperor himself could administrate and lead it himself. However, as its size swelled from hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands, and as the duties of imperial rulership grew, the Emperor had to delegate. In the beginning the leadership of the Legions was split between the Marshals of the different legions, but this proved to be a difficult and cumbersome system, especially as it forced the Marshals, mighty warriors and commanders, to stay in Aurumis.
The High Marshal was thus appointed as a way to free up the leadership of the Legions, while delegating responsibility for the managment of the Legions away from the Emperor.
