Master Gunner Kellis Ranlin (a.k.a. "Kel")

Kellis Ranlin is a female urtlan (half-orc), and Master Gunner aboard "The Doubtful." She's originally from the The Serpent's Teeth city of Freeport, where she was born to urtlan pirate parents and brought up amidst the family trade.
She arguably spent more time at sea than on land during her formative years. Her parents were the scourge of the Imperial Gulf, raiding ships in the bay and out into the World Sea on the pirate brig called "The Mast Snapper." Her mother was the captain, and her father the first mate.
The Mast Snapper was eventually hunted down and destroyed by the Houlon Imperial Navy, leaving the teenage Kellis as one of the only survivors. Her parents, tragically, did not make it. Though criminals, they had always been good to their daughter, yet they were tough enough to make sure she had the skills to survive on the high seas and beyond. Urtlan are not a respected species, (typically) being the product of criminal humans and orcs. They are, however, greatly feared (and respected) as buccaneers and crewmen (and, of course, pirates). One of the largest colonies of urtlan resides within the walls of Freeport.
Shortly after her parents died, Kellis returned to Freeport and began doing the rounds, working on various ships in the region. Her work ranged from swabbing cargo ships to training under the boatswain on passenger vessels. It didn't take long for her to become bored. In her boredom, she fell back in with a gang of pirates and once again hit the high seas off the trade routes. Here she was trained as a ship's gunner and found something she really enjoyed. Possibly too much, it would seem.
For after only five years aboard a handful of pirate brigs, she became a target of the law. Likely due to the number of naval vessels she had a hand in sinking. She was arrested, but miraculously served very little time. In Freeport, the law comes swift, but often not too hard, as long as nobody got killed. Kellis liked to sink ships, not kill their crews.
She was released on a work detail to some of Freeport's defensive fleet, mostly because she knew how to fight like a pirate. That's useful knowledge when pirates are your opposition. Shortly after her work release, she realized she was considered a turncoat by some of the crews that used to hire her. Simply because she chose a work detail over more prison time. In fact, it seemed she was blacklisted. She couldn't get work, and she couldn't afford to charter a ship to take her to the mainland in order to find new work.
It's around this time that a new crew was just forming up. A crew of "misfits" and "unhirables" aboard a modified navy caravel called "The Doubtful." She took a shot. After meeting its first mate, Altious Khaza Eeris (and making a good impression), she was taken to meet the captain, Dreeva Vaeless, who, despite her rough edge (or possibly because of it) took a shine to the young urtlan. It probably helped that he didn't have a gunner to speak of either. He gave her the job on the spot. Master Gunner, first degree.

Kellis never received any formal schooling. What she learned, she learned on the water. Thankfully, her parents were slightly more learned than the average urtlan. And they cared about their daughter's advancement, since it was their dream that she inherit the Mast Snapper one day.

Employment

Kellis crewed on a wide variety of vessels in her relatively short years, from pirate brigs to naval galleons. She's also held down virtually every job you can perform aboard such a vessel. Except for cook. You don't want to try her cooking.
