The Boorka
"Keepers of the ultimate secret, or the grand experiment..."
The Boorka is comprised of former Custodians who broke their vows to pursue forbidden arts. They operate as a conclave out of the city Sage, upon the peninsula of Kreeluk, on Hariel Minuta's eastern seaboard.
The Boorka have no charter or mission statement on record. They are known to study branches of magic left untouched by the Custodians. It is said they traffic with denizens of other planes of existence, including demons and devil. However, there are many who swear that the Boorka are not evil in nature. These same say that in order to combat evil, one must understand evil. It seems the only requirement to become a Boorka is to be "selected from the enlightened," regardless of politics or alignment.
One thing is for certain, the Boorka care about the balance between all forces of the universe, including (but not limited to) light and dark.
One does not apply to become a Boorka, rather one is sought out. Many come from the magical colleges of Varuumae Corona, often "nabbed" before they were to graduate (and assume positions within the Tower of Light). Further, there is no record of members open in any way to public scrutiny. Often, rumors will circulate (often begun out of spite) that some person or another is a Boorka agent, simply because they do not conform to the tenets of polite society (or have a certain curiosity about the Dark Arts).
The Boorka are divided up into different disciples or circles. Each circle has its own leader, or curator. For example, the circle of records is actually commanded (curated) by a scholarly goblin named Lesk. Lesk was Kelike Varble's supervisor during his time with the Boorka.
Other circles include one for each of the eight major schools of magic, a circle of "intrigue," a circle of "demonology," and a circle of "commerce."
Though predominantly comprised of former Custodians, the Boorka also include a branch called The Revenants, consisting entirely of escaped former slaves, all female, who possess explicit potential for magic. The Boorka took them in, taught them to harness their talents, and rose them up into their ranks as full wizards. The Revenants are so named for their oath to track down and destroy any and all slavers in the west (and beyond). They are "ghosts" of their former selves, hardened of mind and dedicated to one outstanding goal (beyond the goals of their Boorka peers). They will not rest until the shadow of slavery has been wiped from the world.
Some believe the Boorka are "using" the Revenants, for the most powerful of magics come only from female casters. Regardless, the group members seems content in their appointments, as long as their "equals" don't stand in the way of their vengeance.
It should be noted, that some escaped slaves chose not to take the "devil's bargain" offered by the Boorka. These renegade women, developed into hedge mages of considerable power, seek revenge on their own terms. If you see one, best stay out of her way.
