The Messengers of Hone

"The Quiet Speakers of Lentokk"

The Hone is a religious sect dedicated to the (extreme) worship of the dark lord, Krytuss (god of corruption and decay). They are an extremely selective lot, with only one church, situated within Lentokk proper (on the surface level, near the Master Delve). It's membership has one major requirement that is likely the reason the church is so exclusive... all members must have their tongues removed.   This "beyond orthodox" branch of those faithful to Krytuss believes that unquestioning servitude is the only path to salvation. But what does salvation even look like when your deity is concerned only with spoilage and rot? You could ask the Hone, if only they could respond.   All this might make them seem like just a forgettable, if intriguing order, were it not for their political importance to the God Kings themselves. For the Hone have found their ultimate purpose amidst the political machinations of the Lentokki Empire and its leaders. As they cannot speak, they cannot tell any secrets. Thus they are invited to attend many meetings of the court, serving as the unofficial recorders of important facts and proclamations. Where it gets strange is they also act as messengers.   The blood mages employ a modified version of the "Magic Mouth" spell, casting it upon the Hone so they can transmit messages across the realm (and sometimes beyond). The unnerving sight of these devout "speakers" is enough to put any recipient of their words on edge. And if the image of a tongueless, often blind (did I mention that they often also pluck out their eyes?) servant of Krytuss doesn't put you off your lunch, consider the fact that they are only employed to deliver the most crucial of messages. And in Lentokk, any crucial message is rarely good news. Most of the time, they are deployed to inform vassals of the empire that their presence is "requested" by one God King or another. Again, rarely a good thing. They are also capable of delivering back a response, in the rare occasion that the recipient cannot make the journey his or herself.   The Messengers take their job quite seriously, to the point that if one attempts to avoid their communique, they will actively hunt that person, unendingly and unerringly, until they achieve their single-minded goal.   In a nation where murder is often not a capitol offense, anyone who kills, maims, or even lightly harms a Messenger is immediately marked for death. A strike against a single Hone is a strike against the God Kings themselves.
CHATTERHALL   The temple of the Messengers is a giant, converted fest hall known, ironically, as Chatterhall. Within it's stone and marble sanctum, the echoes of even the tiniest sound reverberate and are amplified tenfold. It is said, "there are no secrets in Chatterhall," and it would seem that this is quite true. So loud and assuming are the amplified sounds that any visitors are required to remove their footwear before entering the sanctum, less out of respect than practicality, as footsteps go on seemingly forever in the oversized echo chamber of a hall.   The Messengers like it this way as, when it's completely silent, some think the Hone can actually hear the thoughts of those present in their chamber.

Structure

Within the Hone, all are equal. Everyone answers to the God Kings, who act as proxies for the will of Krytuss. This being said, whenever their is any form of dispute (practically never), the high priest or "Hone Master" has the final word.

Public Agenda

The only agenda the Messengers adhere to is that of unquestioning servitude to Krytuss and his proxies, the God Kings.

Assets

The primary "asset" of the Messengers of Hone is their single church, the great sanctum known as Chatterhall.

History

The Hone have been around just about as long as Lentokk itself. Though not blood mages themselves, the Hone consists of those priests of Krytuss who banded together with the Sanguine Order of blood mages to make the grand exodus across the World Sea. They are as devout as the blood mages are powerful, and their devotion makes them dangerous.

Tenets of Faith

Only through silence servitude can one find salvation.
