Hell's Cradle
Hell's Cradle is a land struck by great meteors of Ederstone and have become mutated and hostile. The land is too wild, too uncontrollable for any state to hold, and is extremely dangerous for unprepared intruders.
Hell's Cradle is a volcanic landscape of fire, magma, and poisonous fumes that seems to be mutating into many dreamlike variants: volcanic bogs, obsidian forests, and even an ocean of poison smoke. Hell's Cradle is so naturally good at repulsing invaders that it doesn't need to try - most people just avoid it entirely on their own. This is the land that no one could figure out how to colonize.
A few small Starspawn communities live here, but they are fragmented and few in number.
Geography
Hell's Cradle is 160 by 160 miles across for its main core, though it extends a good ways out at parts. West of the Cradle is the Bladed Wastes. North is the Lurking Mire, Shininghell, and Silent Ridge. East are the Warrens. South is the Kingdom of Hain.
The central Ederstone nexus is the Blinding Cauldron - a volcano where the lava inside shifts between energy forms in a brilliant display. Fire and magma are pumped from this nexus into the surrounding landscape, into rivers and lakes.
South of the Blinding Cauldron are the Firemoors, rocky hills with the occasional tall mountain and a number of small valleys. This is where the liquid rock and burning smoke drain from the Cauldron and surrounding regions. The chaos radiation keeps the heat perpetual and turns the landscape into burning bogs and hills covered in shrubs of fire and obsidian. Many creatures roam these moors. Some, like the cindering moths, clay-and-stone goats, and radiant beavers, are mirrors of old life; other creatures are entirely new. It is a robust ecosystem, though a nightmarish one to try and move through.
East of the Cauldron are the Pluming Peaks, tall mountains that seem to periodically combust and reconstitute in perpetual contained re-enactments of dramatic explosions. The ash and stone is always dragged back down to begin the processes again, though a steady stream of noxious smoke does fall into the valleys to the North (the Chokinglands). Explosions here are incredibly common (even outside the eruptions - it is not uncommon for boulders or chunks of stone to just detonate here), and the ecosystems are built around them.
West of the Cauldron are the Hollowlands, massive mountains that seem to be growing and fusing into each other in a swollen igneous mass. Beneath this enormous bloated wall of black stone is a robust underground ecosystem - the enormous mass is made of layers of igneous rock arranged in complicated tunnels and formations. The closer to the surface you are, the more fragile these layers become; walking on the surface of these mountains is dangerous, as you can just fall through. All kinds of life live in the tunnels here.
North of the Hollowlands are the Obsidian Forests, a long mountain valley dominated by obsidian flora. The landscape is lush with lakes and streams, but nothing here is built for normal life. Some of the waters are red, full of chemicals, with white borax islands. Other waters are brilliant blue, but full of carbonic acid and bubbling with lethal levels of carbon monoxide. Even Prisms would get sick from eating the landscape here; this is a landscape built for the abundant local life specially mutated to the ecosystem. It is beautiful, and mirrors a temperate forest.
The Glimmering Peaks, North of the Obsidian forests, are essentially the Obsidian forests but less actively hostile to outside life; the water here isn't chemically dangerous, and there is more intermixing and hybridization with other life. The mountains do include more smoke-based lifeforms than the forest below, and the landscape is still very recognizably 'Hells' Cradle'. A reasonably-sized community of specially mutated Prism-solar hybrids live here, and seem to have adjusted well to their home.
North of the Glimmering Peaks are the Ashen Plains, one of the two least-active regions of Hell's Cradle. Local flora stir up the ashy soil constantly, to attach their pollen to the drifting specks of ash that fill the air. Creatures from Hell's Cradle, the Bladed Wastes, and Shininghell all comingle in a strange ecosystem that is more-or-less stable.
North of the Ashen Plains is the other least-mutated region here, the Sulfur Hills - which are just Chaos Wasteland with very ecologically-dense hotsprings that attract Hell's Cradle flora and fauna. These creatures bring with smell of sulfur with them, and the hills as a whole are fairly smelly as a result. The Sulfur Hills are not really directly radiated themselves, but are home to many creatures from various wastes.
Returning back to the core of the wasteland, the Mirage Peaks are a mountain range extending from the Northern Cauldron region that border most of the Western regions before shifting Northeast. Creatures and anomalies of light and sensation abound, and illusions here are extremely common. Storms of poison and fire perpetually migrate around the mountains, never stopping. Some of the snow contains micro-organisms that keep it perpetually cold, while other snows are prone to catching alight. Dangerous beasts are known to live here, more aggressive than some of the other Cradle regions.
In the Northeastern corner, The Lost Tear is a strange thing: a valley that has sunken into the ground, and where the surrounding mountains have formed sheer cliffs like massive walls on all sides. There is no viable way in or out without flight. The Lost Tear is unexplored, but there are signs of ruins, water, and maybe even people down there.
And lastly, between the Mirage Peaks and the Pluming Peaks are the Chokinglands - a series of mountain valleys permanently blanketed in smog and ash. In the thick poison smog of the valleys, floating life akin to deep sea creatures drift; other bottom-feeders process the smoke, turning it back into nutrients. Most infamous, Dragomanders of incredible size live in lairs here - in caves hewn into the mountains, cloaked and protected by the fog.
