Tlakra Ilio Kapentzin
Tlakra Ilio Kapentzin (a.k.a. The Shopkeeper)
Ilio Kapentzin is elected leader for life of the Republic of Akatlan, a remarkably young and competent leader only just beginning their reign. They are famously polite and controlled, though their temper when dishonored or insulted is infamous (and rather beloved by some subjects).
Ilio's background is not well known before they entered into the Cult of Akatlaza (the divine representation of Akatlan as a country) around twelve years ago. This only adds to their mystique and appearance of spiritual power, as they have framed themselves very much as the spiritual culmination of the state. That isn't to say that they are notably pious or theologically concerned, but they are very good at ritual and marketing.
More pressing than Gods to Ilio is the very practical matter of administration and budgeting. It is this focus that earned them the nickname "shopkeeper"- their focus on infrastructure, trade, and tax reform has not gone unnoticed. But what began as a slanderous nickname intended to make them look petty during election season (they were also called "Peddler Ilio" and even implied to be foreign) has become endearing to their supporters, and a sign of true investment in the land and state.
While a master of stewardship and management, they have been known to overestimate their competence in other areas: in terms of internal connections, military planning, intrigue, and theology they are middle-of-the-road competent. This can be a problem, as their ambitions and vengeful personality can lead them into biting off more than they can chew. Nonetheless, Akatlan has only prospered more under their rule- and they are likely to hold onto the position for many more years to come.

Personal history
Ilio was not born as Kapentzin- they were adopted into the family much later in life. Rather, they were abandoned in the woods as a child and picked up by the Keepers of Olkum in Northern Akatlan. They grew up rigorously training as a Fox Priest, and learned the arts of wizardry. At 17, they were enrolled in Akatlan's wizard college (The College of Stars ) for further training, but gravitated less towards magic and more towards the physical sciences and mathematics. The Keepers encouraged this, and after five years Ilio entered into the ranks of the Watchers- managerial agents, essentially- as a forensic accountant (a detective that specializes in uncovering financial fraud). They made the jump to Archivist (data analyst), and then up to Specter (elite analyst-detective) after that.
As a flexible and ambitious agent, Ilio was stationed in Akatlan's Cult of Akatlaza fifteen years ago. Within the cult, they were quickly identified as a useful asset and promoted as a financial auditor within Akatlan. There, they ran into an old friend from the college of stars- Kaliqui Kapentzin, a clique-born leader that had risen in politics and cult leadership. Kaliqui and Ilio bonded quickly and after a few years Ilio was strategically married into the Kapentzin family. Ilio, now vouched for by a prestigious family, had become politically viable. Still a member of the Fox Priests, Ilio received permission to pursue their own ambitions in Akatlan as a free agent of sorts.
Ilio's marriage and new family life was only debatably "sincere", but it was happy. Ilio's life was an endless slog of diligence, etiquette, appearances, and duty. They did their best to make their adopted family proud, but they were always on the outside of closer communities. The one great exception to all of this had been Wizard College, where they had felt truly accepted for a time. While the non-magical arts were never as respected as wizarding in academia, among those natural science students Ilio was beloved. So while their relationship to Kaliqui was not romantic, it was extremely dear to Ilio. It gave them a sense of control and stability that roughly approximated happiness- and gave Ilio the confidence to actually start being genuinely happy.
The problems started almost immediately, of course. As a complete nobody suddenly popping into a prestigious family, Ilio faced relentless scrutiny. Stress and feelings of being out of place were nothing new to Ilio, but now they had a life they cared about. Ilio became vengeful and defensive, taking breaches of etiquette very personally (especially from lower-status newcomers) and making sure to completely destroy political enemies that weren't potentially useful.
This need to maintain control and protect their new position mixed with existing ambition. Ilio rose through the ranks, and finally ran for Tlakra in 2015. Their regime has been stable, prosperous, and extremely favorable for the Keepers of Olkum. But tension has begun to build: the Keepers are not particularly fond of some of Akatlan's pseudo-heretical activities, but Ilio has largely ignored them and protected the Azatlazan cult.
