Mute

Physicality: The magicless Mutes are mostly athletic and lean, with pointed ears and dark-grey to light-grey hair. Their skin tone widely varies; from dark-grey or blue-gray to ivory. Due to the fact that their lifestyle tends to be adventurous, they have scars and sometimes even missing body parts to show for the dangerous encounters they’ve had. It is thus not uncommon to find a Mute with a hook, sword or other replacement where one of their limbs used to be. Their clothing tends to leave their arms and shoulders free to facilitate climbing, and they keep most of their gear in pouches and slings at their waists. They tend to differentiate themselves with piercings, personalised navigational gear and in some cases facepaint.   Magicless: since written history, the elves, mostly referred to as “Mutes”, have been a magic-less race, widely believed to be cursed by the ancient gods because of their haughtiness. Mutes have since adapted to exceed other races in their physical and mental abilities, relying only on their own wit and athleticism to overcome any hurdles Haven life might throw at them. They believe in being selfless in defiance of their curse, but their brave nature can make them seem cocky and unpredictable. Only in the last few years have some elves emerged with suddenly gained magical abilities, creating a divide within the elven race. Many mutes either believe that these “Awoken” are prophesized heroes or unnatural outcasts, and are equally respected and feared.   Gliders and Grappling Hooks: Since the Mutes cannot rely on magic or natural flight, they have developed intricate tools and gear to enhance their athleticism and grace in navigating Haven’s floating islands. Grappling hooks, intricate gliders, steel-toed boots and hooked ropes are commonly found on a Mute’s person. They usually aren’t attached to these tools, as they tend to break often in their frequent use, but some tools that have faithfully endured are precious to them. Mutes often personalise these tools; warbands might attach bright-coloured cloth to the tip of their grappling hooks, or a renowned explorer might decorate his glider with trinkets and baubles gathered on his travels.
