Slayer

Monsters have plagued the innocent and defenseless of both the Elder Races and the Young Races for ages beyond count. But, for just as long. There have been those brave or suicidal souls willing to take up arms against them. Whether Alone, or Gathered in groups. For Gold or Glory or All Prizes Possible. Such hunters have ever been known as Slayers.
Slayers are individuals or groups proficient in the craft of hunting and killing profane beasts in return for an agreed upon sum of coin or fair trade for services rendered. These individuals often equip themselves with appropriate weaponry, armor, and equipment. Such items have varied as knowledge and techniques have been refined and passed on through the years. But the goal of the equipment has remained the same through out such time, to achieve the death of the novel enemy of both the Elder Races and the Young Races. The Predigae, Monsters.
In The Second Aeon. Slayers were merely willing individuals assembled in haste to find and destroy vicious beasts that threatened their homes, their families, and their long term peace. But in The Third Aeon. Slayers changed to become Providers of an invaluable public service. Who were either called upon from abroad or were lucky enough to happen by at the moment of their prospective employers dire need. Paid by the people in need with either Coin or the Fair Barter of goods and services. Such as food, lodging, and repairs.
This incarnation of the profession has gone unchanged in The Fourth Aeon. Though their standing with the laws and authorities of the land has taken on a more rigid breed of relationship in The Heartland.
Prospective Slayers in the Heartland must seek a license to practice their trade in the land. These licenses are applied for and issued by the local authorities. Upon reception of the license. The Newly Officiated Slayer must sign a form absolving the local authorities, and the native monarchies, of any and all responsibility for their injury, exposure, and or death. After this, they are free to slay any beast that preys upon the innocents.
A slayer will undertake the hunting and killing of monsters armed with weapons such as a Sword, a Spear, a Crossbow, and many other kinds of weapons. They will also clothe themselves in armors that protect from gnawing fangs, and slashing claws. Though even the thickest armors have failed against many a profane beast.
Though the risks have always been great, and often times, the pay meager. Slayers have and will arise to face epic monsters in the name of Coin or Glory. For as long as there are monsters to torment and slaughter innocent people.

Social Status

Though the trade is unmistakably necessary. There are many among the people who believe that Slayers are either swindlers, or naive idiots marching unwittingly towards death.
Very few Slayers ever take payment up front for their work. But there have been some that have taken either half the sum of coin, or all of it, and disappeared with the monster they were supposed to slay still alive. No sign of struggle. To combat this, many Slayers have gathered into Guilds in order to secure payments upon rendering their services. Establishing a menagerie of norms for professional conduct that became known as the Slayers Code. Refining the Slayers trade, and forming a reputation based defense against ill repute perpetuated by less than professional Slayers and Confidence Men.
Though the Slayers Code is well known in society. The reputation that a Slayer may simply take the coin and run has persisted. Primarily among clients too greedy to part with their money.

Demographics

Though Slayers operate all over the Known World. The Kingdoms of The Heartland keep track of the Slayers Licenses issued. Estimating that roughly over 1% of their populations identify professionally as Slayers. And less than half of that are foreign Slayers acquiring the Licenses to avoid clashing with the local law.

History

In The First Aeon. The Strangers created Monsters to bring death onto the Elder Races. With only those brave individuals willing to risk life and limb in order to defend their families, their homes, and the peace of their lives.
In The Second Aeon. The Sun Elves considered it a religious obligation to slaughter every profane beast in the world. The Night Elves would slay the adults and keep the infants of certain monsters in order to experiment on them. While the Wood Elves did all they could to defend themselves and their families from Monsters.
In The Third Aeon. Slayers became a more refined profession under The Ellician Empire. With techniques and knowledge of monsters passed on by successful Slayers.
And in The Fourth Aeon. Slayers are a legitimate profession with legal regulations and professional codes of conduct.

Operations

Tools

Slayers often employ exaggerated versions of conventional weapons. Such as wide, almost cleaver like swords. Jagged spears with pricking barbs at the bases of the spear heads. And even hooked blades that tear flesh and pry scales or segmented carapaces.
Other tools include ropes, hooks, nets, and several improvised items.
Poisons are also employed. Lending a reason for cooperation between Slayers and Alchemysts.

Materials

Materials employed depend on the monster in question. Certain monsters such as Vampyres and Werewolves are deathly allergic to Silver in any form. Slayers will often cap their weapons in Silver. Or acquire Silver Dust to be utilized in a kind of smoke bomb.

Provided Services

The hunting and killing of belligerent monsters.

Dangers & Hazards

Monsters are deadly things. Their very existence defined by the merciless slaughter of anything unfortunate enough to cross their paths. Slayers are brave and can be highly capable. But they are still mortal beings. And can be killed in the performance of their trades.
