Naming Traditions

Feminine names

Feminine names will end, usually, with a vowel.

Masculine names

Masculine names will end, usually, with a consonant

Family names

Family names are reserved for people of noble birth. If a commoner is to have a family name it will have something to do with where they live, what they do, or nearby landmarks.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

• City Speak

City speak is a dialect that has risen lately in most cities of Aviagard. The dialect can be identified by the loose manner of speaking along with dropping the first consonant sound from the first word spoken in a sentence. People who City Speak also talk quite fast and at a slightly higher pitch compared to the rest of the kingdom.

• Rural Tongue

Rural Tongue is identified by a slow talking speed and minimal use of adjectives to describe most things. Along with this, if someone is talking fast, a person will leave no room for one word to end and another to start creating a slurred way of speaking.

• Noble Speech

This dialect is identified by very distinct pronunciation of all sounds in words and the use of a higher grade vocabulary. The sound is very rigid, with many meaning being left in each sentence spoken depending on the tone and speed of speech.

Common Etiquette rules

• Stomping before entering a building

• Kneeling and covering your eyes with the right forearm during prayer

• Carrying at least one rag to clean yourself with

• Rinsing your face with water before heading out

Common Dress code

Men

• Everyday

A tunic, whether short sleeve or long, with a jacket on top with boots and pants is perfectly appropriate attire for most things. Earth tones are the norm, with brighter tones being worn by people who want to catch your attention like vendors and the like.

• Formal

If there is a formal event a man will need a buttoned shirt with flounced sleeves worn under a jacket and scarf on top of that. For leg wear a man will need tights, pants that reach just below the knee, and flat shoes that are colored either white or black. Light tones are the norm with the tertiary color of your outfit being red. With all of this, you must also be wearing some sort of jewelry that has some sort of red on it.

Women

• Everyday

A blouse with a shawl on top and a long skirt that goes down to the ankles with leggings underneath is normal. While hair should be worn down, it is common to carry a ribbon so you can tie it back or use it as a head band. Gloves is something that can be worn as casual wear but they are seen as a formal event item.

• Formal

A very long sleeveless tunic that reaches above the knee. Over that tunic a long sleeved shirt that reached just beyond the chest; the shirt will have very tight sleeves. Once that is in place she will a dress with large sleeves with a V-neck. On top of that a corset will be worn to compliment her figure. For leg wear she will wear tights, crinoline under her dress, short socks, and ankle height shoes with a small heel.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

It is tradition for the mother to be accompanied by a sister, or close female friend, a wet nurse, and at least one priest/priestess of the mother's religion. More people can be present but it isn't required. The sister/friend is there to hold the hand of the mother during the entire labor, but they can forgo that by having a rope, a ribbon, or twine tying their wrists together. The priest/priestess is there to identify if the child is a Chosen, and to ward off misfortune.

Funerary and Memorial customs

It is customary to keep the body as intact as possible so the one who died has an easier time resting in the afterlife. It is customary to also visit the grave site of the deceased on the day of death and the day of burial. This is to accompany when the soul of the deceased will be at the closest with where their body is.

Beauty Ideals

• Women

A woman should have long hair, a medium sized bust, and a gently curved frame. Golden brown eyes are the most attractive, and black hair being the most sought after. Women on the shorter side are more desirable.

• Men

A man should have some kind of facial hair. A man should be tall, strong, and have some sort of muscle definition.

Courtship Ideals

Courtships are very flirtatious. The ideal outings are dancing, music making, having a picnic, and going for a walk and at least one event for both people involved to meet the other's families. Traditionally, one should flirt during the courtship as much as they possibly can with the goal being to make the other blush. If no blushing happens within two weeks of courtship it is regarded as a failed courtship.
