Barbranid Empire
The Barbranid Empire, officially known as the Empire of the Ascended Barbran was the last Surmean imperial dynasty before the Helegu conquest between 1200 to 1240. Named after the House of Barbran, it endured for over five centuries, from 724 to 1240, making it the longest-lived Surme dynasty. The Barbranid Empire succeeded the Sadan Empire, and reestablished the Surmeans as a superpower, alongside its neighbouring arch-rival, the Sarpadian Empire.
The Barbranid Empire was founded by Zemok, a local warlord who rose to power a century after the Sadan Empire collapsed from internal strife, wars with Sarpadia, increasing raids by the steppe peoples and a series of catastrophic defeats at the hands of migrating hobgoblin legions. After defeating the last remnant Sadan forces in the battle of Zormogan, Zemok established the Barbranid dynasty and set out to restore the legacy of the first Surmean dynasty.
At its greatest extent, the Barbranid Empire stretched from the eastern Inner Zygo to Jydengiss in the south and to central Ceti in the east. The period of Barbranid rule is considered the golden age of Surmean history, before Helegu conquest and subsequent subservience to the Khans.
