Ashkelon Keep
The Ashkelon Keep is the primary defensive fortification for the Holy City of Jeharoa. It is commanded by the city guard of Jeharoa, the Ashkelonian or Ashenguard. It remains the only part of the original walls of the city that were built by the Ashkelon Dynasty during the Mithril Era.
Purpose / Function
The Askhelon Keep is the major defensive bulwark of the city of Jeharoa. It is commanded by Castellan Nizar the Turnclaw, a Mashiqi male green dragonborn veteran who is also a devout follower of Balan and Rashi. Nizar’s forces, the Ashkelonians or Ashguard as they are sometimes known, act as the city’s watch and primary defense force. They have seen to the city’s defense even during the time of the Qartagonian and are not considered a Pilgrim military order. As such, they recruit mostly from the local Mashiqi population and are deeply distrusted by the Brotherhood of Bronze and the other Pilgrims.
The Keep has mostly defensive features including a bailey, a well, a chapel, towers, barracks, small officers quarters, armories, and dungeons. The Ashkelon Dungeons are where prisoners of the state are kept. These include both Qartagonian POWs as well as Pilgrim deserters, traitors, and vigilantes. Every week on Father’s Day, the Qartagonians are bound and sold as slaves in the Iron Square. On these days, those scheduled for execution are also shown to the public before they are hanged.
