Molasses Brigade

Funny how I went from avoiding the Molasses Brigade to working with them daily for the sake of my patrons.
There comes a time when every growing city can no longer operate without a group dedicated to the security and safety of its citizens. For the city of Bonbon, that group is the Molasses Brigade.

What's in a Name?

Molasses may be slow moving, but outrunning a member of the Molasses Brigade is more difficult than their name implies. Their uniform is heavy, bulky, and cumbersome. Yet, when it is time to move, members are quick and agile. Even their shorter members can jump higher and further than the average citizen. Their name is an essentially a bad dad joke thought up by their Leader, Duke Rugas. He enjoys telling criminals that they were “slower than molasses,” when they are captured. Before their current name, they were called the “Bonnie Brigade.” There is a group of little old ladies with the same name in Bonbon; therefore, the name change was more than welcome.

Recruitment and Training

Once a year, the brigade opens to recruits. Recruits must have completed all levels of formal education and have a clean record. They are expected to move into the training barracks full-time and undergo unpaid training for six months. While in training, recruits are supervised at all times and must adhere to a very strict routine. They are told when to eat, sleep, clean, train, take breaks, practice personal hygiene, etc. During any physical training, they wear weights under their uniform, making the training much harder. At the end of training, those that haven't quit, are allowed to remove the weights and undergo a three-day trial proving themselves. The weighted training is believed to be a key part of how they become so fast and agile. If they are successful, they become official members of the brigade. They receive a small salary and are assigned to a division of the brigade based on the strengths they demonstrated in training. Based on the assigned division, they receive additional education and training. They are allowed to live where they want in the city as long as they report for duty on time every time.

Responsibilities

Members are responsible for keeping the peace and safety in the city while patrolling the streets. They enforce the law and protect those that need protecting. Likewise, they also monitor and guard the entrances to the city, recording every person who enters or leaves. Elite members help protect the ruling family. Some members are responsible for the interrogation and rehabilitation of criminals, as well as enforcing any punishments. If there is ever a need for a military presence in Bonbon, the brigade is willing and ready to fulfill that need.

The Molasses Brigade certainly has an eye-catching name! I think it's quite clever for them to train with weights, knowing they will be wearing heavy armor. From the picture, it looks like they are also designed to keep them warm? I'm sure your article on Bonbon has a description of the city's climate, but I think you could include a sentence or two here to explain the rationale behind the uniforms.
