Pertentores Corps

The Empire of Stanver sees itself in a constant arms race against other powers in the Old World. It is the Empire's desire to always maintain its supremacy over its opponents (both real and imaginary/perceived).
For this purpose the Pertentores Corps was founded. They are the first to trial new magics and technologies developed by the Empire's brightest (and most unhinged, if you ask some) minds. These brave (foolhardy would be more apt, maybe) alchemists and artificers risk their health and safety to advance the capabilities of the entire Imperial Army, by conducting practical test-runs of cutting edge developments and recording the results on the fields of battle.

Composition

Manpower

The current strength of the Pertentores Corps is roughly 30000 personnel, 9000 of which are support staff.

Equipment

The equipment of a Pertentor can vary wildly, depending on their specialization and the thing they are testing. From simple to extremely sophisticated weapons and armor, along with sometimes even magical items (again ranging from quite mundane to extremely powerful).
If one were to generalize (as I have annoyingly been tasked to do), their standard equipment would include a set of light armor, a simple melee weapon and some other objects and supplies, which would be typical for any soldier (like a backpack, waterskin and rations).

Weaponry

Again the weaponry of a Pertentor is almost impossible to generalize. Whilst each carries a simple weapon, like a dagger or a mace, for personal defense up close, the Pertentores usually wield experimental (and highly dangerous) weaponry (which, at times, defies any explanation). They are always encouraged to utilize their "toys" as much as and as many different situations and configurations as possible.

Structure

The Pertentores Corps consist of three separate divisions with a strength of 10000 each (support staff included). Each division is split up into multiple smaller brigades, which then are divided into regiments (and so on and so forth, this is an encyclopedia, not a military-organization chart).
The divsions "Chemos", "Ars" and "Totis" have different compositions (which are supposed to increase efficiency and the yield useful in... oh, I'm not supposed to write that down). "Chemos" is made up entirely of alchemists, whilst "Ars" contains only artificers and "Totis" is a mixture of both. The respective brigades and smaller groupings are again divided by the specialization of their members.
Rarely spoken about is the dedicated support staff, which assists (and quite frankly solely makes possible) the trials and combat activities of the Pertentores. The support and logistics mirror that of the larger Imperial Army, only on a smaller scale (and much more experienced with... unconventional issues and problem solving).

Tactics

The tactics of this formation very much depend on which part of it is involved. Basically anything is possible and feasible. In general their most common tactic is to surprise their opponents with whatever new thing they get to test out at that time.

Training

Safety training. Most of their training is safety training. It does not amount to much (even first-semesters at the Academy are more proficient in not damaging themselves or their fellow students), but seems to be sufficient to prevent large amounts of casualties from friendly fire, mishandling equipment and so on.
Most of these daredevils are adequately knowledgeable (I will admit begrudgingly), courtesy of Imperial education and the small part of their training regimen that is dedicated to scientific studies.
