The Dwarves begin to rise as the major power in the world due to their skill with metalwork and technology. Perceiving a threat to the balance of the world, the rest of the races band together to suppress their power. Early in the year 4987, the Humans and Elves combined their strengths, and launched a series of attacks on several prominent Dwarven cities and centers of research in an attempt to cripple their burgeoning technological prowess. These attacks started a war which lasted for 13 years before a peace treaty was signed, and an uneasy calm ushered in the beginning of the Third Age.
