Merminsky Albert Pinckney (a.k.a. Mermi)
Physical Description
While, Mermin is overall in excellent physical condition, it has declined somewhat following his injury. They are much less active and working in a much less physically demanding job.
Mermin walks with a slight limp, a result of the injury in the mines. The mine's staff clerics think that the limp is, unfortunately, permanent.
Mermin takes their looks quite seriously, more so than even
Nob Grubb himself. Whenever on the job, Mermin is always wearing a set of fine clothes, typically a dress shirt with a vest. While Nob insists that it is not necessary and even too much sometimes, Mermin prides themself in their professional look. Part of the reason is practice and preparation for finding a job in
Al Ennore when the time comes, hopefully at a more high-end establishment.
Mental characteristics
Mermin was born and raised in
Mudvein. Their parents were one of the few farmers in town, but Mermin was never interested in farming. When Mermin was of age, they took a job in the
Steelhammer Mines. They worked there until an injury prevented further work, which lead to a job at
The Mud Flow. Since being employment there, Mermin has fallen in love with the tavern owner's wife,
Rotrude Grubb. Together, they desire to leave Mudvein, but must keep their relationship a secret for now, to avoid
Nob's retaliation.
Mermin presents himself primarily as male, but only weakly. They have no qualms about telling others they are bisexual. Mermin preferred pronouns are They/Them, but he takes no offense to anyone who uses He/Him, and doesn't even bother correcting anyone that they don't see regularly.
Mermin considers themself to be bisexual. While they certainly prefer women, Mermin has had long-term relationships with men in the past.
Mermin never recieved a formal education. Their parents taught them the basics they would need to survive, and everything else has been learned on the fly on jobs.
Mermin's first job was working in the
Steelhammer Mines. After a work accident, Mermin needed something less intensive while recovering.
Nob Grubb had an opening for the night shift at
The Mud Flow, which ended up being an excellent fit for Mermin.
Mermin considers their injury at Steelhammer Mines to be a failure. They were improperly installing an overhead support beam when it fell and broke their leg.
Mermin doesn't have any strong sense of morality. They are willing to do whatever they deem best, including the affair with
Rotrude Grubb and stealing small amounts of money from
The Mud Flow.
Personality Characteristics
Mermin's relationship with
Rotrude Grubb is currently their biggest driving factor. Mermin also has a desire to see more of the world than
Mudvein and the
Steelhammer Mines.
Mermin has never been particularly fond of ales, preferring slightly watered down spirits instead (they'll say the flavor is better that way, but many disagree).
Mermin believes themself smarter than most in town, largely due to the secret affair with Rotrude. In their mind, only someone so smart could be so good at keeping this sort of secret. In reality, Mermin's intelligence is average at best, and the affair is no longer truly secret. Working in a tavern has also left them addicted to local gossip. Mermin prides himself on being able to pick up on more information than others usually give out.
If Mermin's apparel is damaged, stained, or otherwise imperfect, they does everything possible to fix it as soon as possible, even if this means delaying service to patrons.
Their hygiene is immaculate. Mermin prides theirself on their looks and self presentation. To this end, nearly an hour is spent each evening preparing himself for work. They relaxe this slightly when not at work, but most people would be unable to tell the difference the majority of the time.
Social
Mermin's relationship with their parents is generally good. They all still talk to each other and Mermin visits regularly.
Mermin exudes confidence. As they are often working alone at
The Mud Flow, they've had years to practice and refine the art of talking with people. In conversation, Mermin is very charismatic and presents himself as friendly and helpful, while maintaining a professional appearance. They are quite extroverted, and will casually strike up conversation with anyone and everyone.
As they are used to working with their hands, Mermin tends to make motions with his hands while talking. When asked about it, they'll say that it arose from not having anything else to do with his hands while speaking.
Mermin's regular speaking voice is a full, middle of his register, voice. They try to use bigger and fancier words when they can, but the lack of education means this is actually quite hard to do successfully. They are quick to compliment patrons, a thinly veiled attempt to earn the trust of anyone who would come to
The Mud Flow. Despite sometimes coming off as overdone and insincere, it usually works and helps boost business. Mermin rarely swears while on the job, maintaining professional presentations, but they rival any sailor when in private.
History
Nob hired Mermin in 108 AN to be the night manager of The Mud Flow. Their relationship has remained largely business in nature, neither interacting much outside of work. Mermin doesn't like Nob, but has been careful to not let Nob know. Mermin is also having an affair with Nob's wife, Rotrude, behind his back. Mermin continues to put on the face of a hard worker in the mean time.
History
Mermin and Rotrude met when Mermin was hired to work at The Mud Flow. For the first two years they worked together, their relationship remained strictly professional. Over time, largely due to Rotrude's frequent ranting about her relationship with her husband, Nob, Mermin fell in love with Rotrude. Their relationship grew over time, eventually culminating in an ongoing affair behind Nob's back. They desire to run away, possibly to Al Ennore, to make a life together, but have not yet saved up enough money to do so.
In 108, despite their efforts to remain secret in their relationship, Medard Underfoot, a Miner working in the Steelhammer Mines, saw Mermin and Rotrude sneaking off alone into the forest for some private time. Medard has begun blackmailing Rotrude and Mermin, threatening to reveal what he knows to Nob.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both Mermin and Rotrude desire to leave Mudvein. They are tired of living in mud and want to make a life together somewhere else.
Shared Secrets
Their affair is currently a secret from Nob.
Legal Status
Affair
Mermin has acquired about 50gp through his work. They aren't particualy good at saving it, though. That money has taken years of saving and stealing to acquire. Mermin spends much more than most think he should on clothing. Besides the gold, Mermin has a trunk full of clothing, but little else of value.
