Nobben Grubb
Physical Description
For his age, Nob is in remarkable condition. He is on his feet all day, day after day, with a spring in his step that defies his age. As he is always on his feet and moving about, he maintains a slim form, despite eating throughout the day. Nob has developed a slight cough from years of smoking.
Nob dresses rather plainly, as do most residents of Mudvein. The one thing that most people notice is Nob always has a pipe in his mouth, whether he is smoking or not.
Mental characteristics
Nob was born to a family of farmers in
Oldhaven. He was raised on the farm and assumed he would spend his whole life farming. Unfortunately, fate had other intentions. When Nob was only 17 years old, his family's farm was attacked by some wild giant boar from the nearby forest. Nob's entire family was killed by the beasts, and Nob was left severely wounded. He was unable to get into town himself due to the wounds, so he was forced to treat them himself. Those wounds left him infertile and unable to have children of his own. He buried his family on the farm and sold it.
After losing his family, Nob desired for something different. After spending a year trying out different jobs, he settled on tavern work. Nob was not content with working for someone else, though. Over the years, he made some connections during his work and eventually secured funding through the
Steelhammer Guild to build a tavern in
Mudvein. After years more of planning and design,
The Mud Flow was finally built and Nob moved to Mudvein.
Since then Nob has spent his days managing the tavern. He met a beautiful woman one day in his tavern,
Rotrude, and married her a short time later. Due to Nob's infertility, they never had children. Nob is beginning to feel the effects of old age and is starting to consider retirement. He is adamant, despite his wife's pleadings, on retiring on Oldhaven.
Nob has no formal education. His mother,
Bertrada, taught him informally to read and write
Common and
Halfling. Through his work at the tavern, Nob learned bits and pieces of other languages from travelers.
Nob worked on his family farm as a child. After his family died, he bounced from job to job in
Oldhaven. While doing so, he worked jobs such as stable hand, blacksmith, winemaker, and eventually tavern hand. Working in the tavern is what he enjoyed the most, so he set out to get his own tavern. Provided with a loan, he eventually built his own tavern in
Mudvein and plans to work there until he physically can't any longer.
The death of Nob's family has left Nob with some trauma that he refuses to deal with. Those who are close to Nob and know his story suspect that his infrequent temper outbursts feed off of the events of that day.
Personality Characteristics
Nob's desires have simplified over the years. He wants to run the best tavern in the land. In that, he actually somewhat succeeds. Travelers often consider his tavern in the region, though it is less known outside of Dimaerune.
Nob is an honest business man. He treats his customers, even the poorest, as royalty and never lets anyone leave hungry. If anyone over pays, he will go out of his way to make sure they get the extra refunded.
While Nob is generally a kind and level-headed person, in extreme situations he can develop quite a temper, even to the point of violence. This is exacerbated by a mild drinking problem. He doesn't get violent when drinking, but lets anger build up only to be released when he can't hold it in anymore. Surrounded by all kinds of folk all day, Nob also has a tendency to spread gossip. His demeanor leads others to trust him more than they should and share more that they ought.
Nob maintains cleanliness as important for a business owner. His room has a private bath, which his employees fill fresh every night.
History
Nob and Rotrude met in Mudvein when Rotrude was traveling through and instantly fell in love. They married after dating for a little bit over a year. They disagree on what to do once they retire. Nob is set on returning to Oldhaven to retire, but Rotrude doesn't want to go to Oldhaven or stay on Mudvein. This negatively affected Rotrude's view on Nob. Nob, not being very perceptive of such things, hasn't noticed his wife's growing unhappiness over the past few years. Rotrude has been in a secret relationship with another man and tavern employee, Mermin Pinckney, since 108 AN.
Nicknames & Petnames
Being rather short already, Rotrude usually just calls Nob "Nob". On the other hand, Nob has all sorts of names for Rotrude: Roe, Trudy, Roeroe, and whatever else happens to pop into his head. Rotrude isn't a fan of all of the names, but has learned to live with it.
Legal Status

History
Nob hired Mermin in 108 AN to be the night manager of The Mud Flow. Their relationship has remained largely business in nature, neither interacting much outside of work. Mermin doesn't like Nob, but has been careful to not let Nob know. Mermin is also having an affair with Nob's wife, Rotrude, behind his back. Mermin continues to put on the face of a hard worker in the mean time.
While Nob is not particularly wealth, he does live comfortably. He doesn't keep much extra coin on hand, usually around a hundred gold pieces. Any extra money is spent reinvesting into the tavern or paying off the remainder of its debt. The
Steelhammer Guild loaned Nob 15,000gp (at a modest interest rate) and they donated the 100 immovable rods needed to construct the tavern safely. Nob still owes roughly 3,000gp, paying 100gp per month. He plans to sell the tavern and retire to
Oldhaven when he is no longer able to keep up with operations. Nob wants to sell
The Mud Flow for 20,000gp, but finding someone who can afford it will be difficult.
