Personal history

Inheritor of the Mayfield legacy of Brightmoon, Harold Mayfield entered the service of Lord Decker Chamberlain at a young age. During this time of training and service Harold befriended a fellow squire named Simon Aimery and they became close companions during their early careers.

After earning their spurs, Harold and Simon were inducted together into Lord Chamberlain's Order of the Garter and fought for their Lord Protector through the various rebellions that plagued the later years of King Godric Mortmare's reign. Harold distinguished himself as a skilled swordsman during these campaigns and received a personal commendation from Lord Chamberlain after slaying Lionel Comstock in a duel at the Siege of Slieve Castle.

After the sudden death of his father, Old Lord Mayfield, in 951 PCE Harold was forced to return to York and claim his inheritance as the new Baron of Brightmoon. At this time he sought the comfort of Lady Brittany Lorimer, daughter of Duke Rendell of York. The two had known eachother since childhood and the Duke, Harold's feudal overlord in County York, supported the match. A betrothal soon followed.

Those who knew Harold in his youth indicate that the young lord's personality was altered soon thereafter. Always of the solitary and reflective sort, Harold now grew insular and brooding. Many have thought this to be a consequence of enduring the weight of rule. Others believe Harold experienced a significant life-changing encounter. Serge of Moray, Grandmaster of the Machinist Clan, claims to have witnessed such an event:

I remembered him from a wee lad. I had been his tutor then and I recall he was ever so taken with myth and mystery. Always was. Enchanted since childhood by dreams of Mount Brightmoon, Harold yearned to discover its secrets. That winter after the Old Man had passed, the new Baron was determined to confront the secret of the solstice moon...

He asked me to come and observe the descent of the Brightmoon that year and I was glad of it. Together we reached the summit of Mount Tycho just as dusk was drawing on, and then we waited as the dark night spread over the moor...

Late that evening I remember him standing near the Face Stone as the light began to descend. It wasn't the moon, of course. It looked like a star dropping out of the firmament, as if the manifold of heaven had dropped a single glittering jewel from its crystal casement. Harold was holding the blue bracers of Brightmoon above his head and staring into the light. As the bright nimbus drew further down I caught a glimpse of the object, a gleaming blue sphere so dazzling that I could no longer see Harold's silhouette and had to look away...

Then I heard a noise. It was a queer sound, not really a voice at all though it formed barely perceptible words. It sounded like the swarming of locusts. At a distance I couldn't make out the words, but it must have asked a question because Harold answered it in the affirmative. Through the droning buzz I heard the baron call back to the blazing star metal: "YES! IT WILL BE DONE! UPON MY LIFE, I SWEAR IT!"

In that instant the object darted upwards at an incredible speed and released a wave of force that knocked me to the ground. I lost consciousness and when I recovered my wits, Lord Harold was gone. No one saw him again until he returned two months later.
— Serge of Moray, the Last Grandmaster of the Machinists

When Harold returned from the mountain at the end of winter, he was wearing the distinctive blue armour which would eventually be known as his particular hallmark. He wouldn't speak of where he had been. His betrothal agreement lapsed and he neglected the obligations of Court and Wargang. As a result, Harold lost favour with the Lord Protector and failed to be reappointed as a Garter Companion.

During the Dispute of Northern Succession Harold was given the unappealing and dangerous task of defending Britannian outposts on the Norman shore. To some this would have been considered a suicide mission, and for many it was, but In spite of the stunted leadership of his appointed commander, Lord Wolnoth Brevington, Harold successfully held Castle Morriban for 76 days thus securing Britannian control of Brittany until the end of hostilities.

Harold regretted that he was absent from the real fighting of the war, which culminated at the Battle of Somerset in 957 PCE. Lord Chamberlain's death at Somerset weighed heavily upon Harold's conscience and certainly played a role in his decision to carry on the late lord protector's legacy in alliance with Sir Frederick Brasden and Sir Taylor Meddowes when they began their personal crusade against the Hidden Hand of Princes.
