Session 33: How's That For Divine Intervention?
General Summary
The session began on BriskWind 22, 2597, though time moves oddly in the Astral Sea. Within the residence of Galendor Star and Mal'ock Star, the party shared conversation and snacks with them in the steel library. Kale still had questions about why they left him, and they explained how they do not experience the passage of time in the astral sea as they would in the world at large. Further, they told how they were both over 3,000 years old and were servants of Rcan, a now dead deity whose incarnation in the material plane was the moon. They serve as cartographers and stellar historians of the planes, having minor influence to implant signals and warnings into the constellations on the night sky. They told Kale it eventually was his destiny to do this work with them for the next 100,000 years, but the time was not yet right.
With this, at Oberon's prompting, they said they needed the party to investigate the Hells. The portal within the astral sea had been oddly quiet and something dangerous was surely brewing on its account. The party rested for the evening, Rodan Spice left a large sum of gems with the Stars, Alena Birch communed with Artemis, and after some girl talk the party slept for the evening in Kale's room.
The next morning, over a large breakfast in the clockwork kitchen prepared by A6 and A12, they were shown by Mal'ock Star the Star'ship. A 100' wide, 700' long, 6 mast, clockwork, astral sea traversing ship. It was not powered by mere thought, but by story. The party decided to take A17 along with them and they headed out. In the wheelhouse of the ship, each member of the party shared a story. Some were true stories, some were fabrications, some were backstory, and some were nonsense. However, the stories were enough, and the central battery was powered so Rodan Spice could steer the ship while Wren with A17's assistance could navigate the ship.
Travel went smoothly until the party encountered a Githyanki Floating Fortress on the back of a dozen astral dreadnoughts. They were approached by Githyanki Commodore Olso astride an astral dreadnought who demanded payment for passage. When he learned the party was going to the Hells, he asked for them to retrieve The Psychic Flail of Gith, Hoisted Aloft by a Statue of Gordal in the Center of the First Ring of the Hells. The party agreed and continued on their way. They made a slight detour to go near 3/4 of a remnant of the moon but did not interact with it, instead basking in the haunting beauty of a dead deity.
The party next arrived at the portal to the Hells, located on an oblong disk tens of miles wide. The surface was irregular, made of white stone streaked by rivers of red. Jagged points cropped up around it. At its center sat the portal, a deep and reflective red. If focused upon, they could see inside of it to the scorched earth that remains in the first layer of the Hells. Giving command of the ship to A17, the party headed into the First layer of the Hells, Solreva, a mostly a volcanic waste. It was nearly, empty, lacking the Erinyes who protect against incursion from demons normally (according to Alena Birch). Using a combination of magics from Kale, Wren, and Oberon, the party continued safely over lava rivers and through toxic gas clouds. At the center of a destroyed stone city, they found a metal disk suspended by thick chains over a volcanic like pool of lava with an orange portal at its center and two Erinyes on either side. Additionally, the statue of Gordal holding the The Psychic Flail of Gith was around the edge. The party quickly took possession of the flail and then continued down to the metal platform where one Erinyes remained. After it demanded they surrender for arrest and they refused, stating they were investigating, the creature attacked. At first the party held their own, but more and more of these creatures poured out of the portal as the battle raged on. Finally, a massive matron came through the portal and began adding her spellcasting into the fray. As most hope seemed lost and several members of the party were taking critical wounds, something occurred.
A spell directed at Kale fizzled out halfway to him. It was countered. From above, they noticed a figure slowly descending. A circle, an ancient looking relic rested upon his head. A scar gashed down his eye, and they saw the eye does not look normal. In one fleshed hand, he held a cane. A silver raven sitting upon the top. They saw his other hand out stretched in a counter-spell, and not made of flesh, but instead an incarnation of chaos and magic. Behind his hands, they saw a fine suit of greys, blacks, silvers and greens. Snake eyes were woven and stitched into the fabric. A thick leather bound journal with a floating quill and ink well were perched above his shoulder. And another dark ancient looking book was tucked under his arm. Atticus returned.
To the party's jubilation, a group of unfamiliar ethereal figures emerged from Atticus and held the Erinyes at bay while Atticus used a scroll to cast fly on the party. They ascended through the portal above and back to the astral sea and their waiting Star'ship. Thus ended the session... on Fieldrest 22, 2597. Two months after they left the material plane.
