Session 69: We Didn't Have a Lot of Leverage, But I Feel We Made a Pretty Bad Deal...

General Summary

After reading and returning their copy of Swamp Love, The Sewer Saga Vol IV, the party made their way outside on BranchForth 15, 2597. They went to see headmaster Velomatus about which Charles Atticus Fitzgerald checked out the book. He cautiously alluded that it was in fact the Benefactor who was Charles Atticus Fitzgerald. Atticus explained to the party how he was raised by the benefactor but not in a way which was paternal. He was raised to have skills to work for him in return. Atticus was supposed to go back to his estate, but instead fled.
Kale suggests the Benefactor might not be their enemy but Atticus was rather staunch about not going back to the Benefactor, saying it would be impossible to defeat him. Instead, Rodan Spice and Kale convinced him that they have to try, or everything they are doing is in vain.
With this, Velomatus produces a vial of ink that can be used for infernal contracts as the conversation shifts in that direction. With this and blood, Atticus writes and Tork and Rodan Spice sign the following Infernal Contract:
Party Members:   Charles Atticus Fitzterald the III Rodan Spice, Tork,   Preamble: Whereas the undersigned adventurers, hereinafter referred to as "the parties," recognize the dangers of their chosen path and the potential threats from external forces, this contract sets forth a crucial clause to ensure the safety and protection of one another.   Clause:   In the event that Atticus is forcibly taken or threatened to be taken against their will by "The Benefactor" in any way shape or form, Rodan and Tork hereby agree to take all necessary measures, including but not limited to lethal force, to prevent such capture or to ensure that Atticus does not fall into the hands of said entity. This agreement is made in the understanding that capture by such entities may lead to irreparable harm, compromise of the party’s goals, or endangerment of their lives and freedoms.   Acknowledgment:   By signing below, the parties affirm their understanding and acceptance of the terms stated herein.   Oath to the Infernal Lords:   By signing below, the parties bind themselves to this infernal pact, invoking the powers of the infernal realms to enforce this sacred obligation.   Signatures:   In witness whereof, the parties hereto have executed this contract as of the date first above written.   Signed, Charles Atticus Fitzgerald the III   Signed, Rodan Spice   Signed, Tork
Following this, there is a bit of small talk with Velomatus about Swamp Love, the Sewer Saga, Vol. V and rumors around its release (it might have a first draft down in the Rodanis Consortium!). After this the party goes back to the alumni guest house and holds another rager before the next morning planning their next moves. Atticus tells them the Benefactor lives in the Southern portion of the Whispering Oaks on the Eastern seashore. Turning into wisps of wind, the party travels over the course of the day to the Benefactor's residence, arriving near twilight.
A massive white stone rectangular mansion situated in the center of a large grass circle with compass rose pathways extending to the cliff edge and other directions, it is the home of someone with old money. The party ascended the 15 steps up to the bronze doors and were greeted by a butler. He left them on the stoop until dark and then brought them inside to meet with the Benefactor the next day (he was too busy to meet with them that day). They were shown to beatuiful quarters in a hemispherical common room with two stories of bedrooms, a large table, much food and drink, and anything else they desired. Atticus remained a shell of his normal self from the moment they set foot on the property and remained that way through the evening. The next morning after breakfast, around 10AM, they were retrieved by the butler.
At the end of the grand entrance hall, they came to engraved bronze doors with other metals inlaid. After opening they found themselves in the benefactor's study. Bookshelves and glass cases lined the walls and metal bars locked away the contents. Overstuffed armchairs were strewn throughout and a 20' long fireplace crackled with fire. Directly across from the doors a tall backed armchair faced away from the entrance with a silver tea set on a table to one side of it while the other contained a gallon sized glass jar swirling with black and purple mist. Upon entering they laid eyes upon the benefactor.
The benefactor was a man in his 50s, black hair with silver around the edges making him regal. He filled out his form, but was not stocky or fat. His eyes were intense and when they entered, Atticus dropped to a knee in front of him looking down. The Benefactor ignored him and talked with the other party members. He asked about their service and for a small issue, ordered the butler to go outside and be whipped 39 times. When Rodan Spice and Kale suggested together he acknowledge Atticus, he did so. Tork tried to interject, and the Benefactor threw him back 40' without lifting a finger as Tork tried to punch the Benefactor at his own request.
With this the Benefactor began verbally berating Atticus who was sniveling and unsure of himself. Switching between reprimand and something akin to sick affection, the Benefactor refused to allow the party to look for the Altar of Titans by giving them the book they sought (he said he destroyed it so only he could have its knowledge). Instead he laid harder into Atticus for caring about "the world" and eventually told Joint Operations LLC they could work for him. They could retrieve pieces of the Altar and then he might, possibly, slightly be open to one of their suggestions about its usage. Atticus quickly agreed and with that the party was led back outside into the midday sunlight on BranchForth 17, 2597 where the session ended.
