The Empire of Halion
The Empire of Halion has a long and storied history that stretches back centuries. It is said that the empire was founded sometime in the early Age of Myth, rising in power and sweeping nearly the entire continent under its sphere of influence. During the empire's peak, it controlled both the eastern and western coasts of Istria as well as everything in-between. However, its northern border never changed, as the Imperial line feared the retribution they would suffer if they ventured into the frozen wastes of Nordenland.
The empire flourished for many years, becoming a center of trade and commerce, with its cities bustling with activity and wealth. It was also a center of learning, with great universities and libraries, and the seat of a powerful and influential religious order, the Church of the Thirteen Divines. However, the empire's fortunes began to decline in the late Age of Myth.
One of the first major setbacks for the empire came when a Halish general who would one day become the king of what is now known as Escela launched a military coup, taking control of the western half of the province. This cut off Halion proper from both its most lush food source and its most vital trading partner, which was the elves.
Another blow came towards the end of the Age of Myth when the emperor was assassinated before producing any heirs. Without solid leadership, the nation broke down, starting an endless civil war between the lords of Halion. This conflict would continue for hundreds of years, becoming known as the War of Succession.
The empire also faced environmental challenges during this time, as desertification started at the southernmost regions of the Khastin Mountains, turning once-fertile farmland to sand as if cursed by the gods themselves.
The final blow to the empire came when the southernmost cities rebelled and claimed their freedom as if cutting themselves free from a festering wound. These cities became the Free Cities known today, while the empire continued to struggle with internal conflict and external threats.
Despite these challenges, the empire persisted, with different factions and families vying for power and control. The Sentinels of Halion, a powerful organization of royal guards and spies, played a key role in maintaining order and protecting the empire's interests.
Today, the Empire of Halion is a shadow of its former self, with much of its territory lost and its power greatly diminished. However, it remains an important player in the politics of the region, with powerful factions and individuals still vying for control and influence.
