The Icecrown Mountains are a long line of tall and foreboding mountains that stretches across Ithan and separates the more hospitible areas from the Magic Wastes. These mountains are extremely cold, and their many ravines, cliffs, and caves make them perilous to climb. Only the bravest — or stupidest — dare to climb even their lowest peaks. Those who have survived the climb to Galmit Peak's summit rarely survive the trip back down, but those who make both treks are commonly given accolades within the religion of Koaelore.
Resources and Dangers
Those mountains are rich with ore, but mining just isn't possible. Not with those avalanches.
The Icecrown Mountains are full of untapped sources of iron, ikos, copper, aluminum, tin, silver, gold, and even platinum. These sources of metal and magic, though, will never be commercially viable due to the high cost required to even survey the areas they are found in, much less mine them. The dangers associated with the mountains also make mining near-impossible to sustain; mining elsewhere would be more profitable and yield more usable ore.
Avalanches and fierce pop-up storms are the primary dangers in the Icecrown Mountains. One could be alive and warm one minute, then dead and buried in snow within seconds. All it would take is a single sound too loud or a single jostle of the wrong rock. Despite these dangers, the Icecrown Dwarves, Icecrown Giants, and Icecrown Trolls all survive within the exansive range of mountains.
Flora
Most of the area of the Icecrown Mountains is covered in a sparse, coniferous forest that is home to several species of evergreen trees. This forest thins out further as the elevation increases until it completely disappears at the treeline at 3,500 meters above sea level. There are some mosses and other small plants that can be found up to 5,000 meters above sea level, but these plants are poorly documented.
