Baron/Baroness
Duties
Being the lowest rank of the true royalty their roles change from primarily being about warfare to primarily involving governance. Barons/Baronesses were expected to rule their baronies from their manor or castle (if they could afford one from their personal coffers). Resolving local disputes and managing their lords and knights in matters of defending their territories. They are also the lowest rank to be (normally) allowed positions at royal councils although relatively rare compared to higher nobles. A Baron/Baroness could be expected to rule over an area of a few up to a dozen villages.
Responsibilities
As the pattern goes the Barons/Baronesses are expected to offer to their liege viscounty, half of their total earnings as a tribute and the loyalty of themselves, their lords, and their knights during the event of war.
Benefits
A Baron/Baroness is among the first layers of society that could reasonably live a completely comfortable life (at least during peacetime). They are granted a large manor or small castle depending on the individual as well as 4-10 lords to serve as both council and retinue. Along with the Barons/Baronesses lords, they will often have a personal guard of knights between 3-6. In an emergency, they could levy the lords and knights beneath them granting them a fighting force of 4-10 Lords, 20-40 knights, and 160-480 assorted footsoldiers. They are also further rewarded half of their lieges earnings which can exceed 30-40GP per lord under their command.
