Pentheus

Pentheus is King of Kadmeia. He is the grandson of Kadmos - the original founder and king of the country. Why he was selected over his uncle, Kadmos' son Polydoros is not entirely clear, but the uncle has now returned to Kadmeia to claim the crown. 
Pentheus was opposed to the cult ofDionysusafter its arrival in his lands. When the maenads and other cultists occupied the cemetery en route to Rabdos and ran roughshod over Ormos, Pentheus ordered his people to act. They scattered the cultists, sending most back to their homes. And seemingly, they killed Dionysus himself. 
Pentheus remains king, but Polydoros his uncle has returned from Nostauron to try to claim the throne.
