River gate
Purpose / Function
These double gates were rebuilt to the foundations of the original ones. There is evidence that at one time they were water gates for aqueducts that have long ago been destroyed.
Alterations
The gates were built on top of old stone foundations.Originally they would have been much bigger but were not needed to be this time around. There is a red paint applied long ago that was enchanted to light up when any undead walked close and to cause them to shy away, a Gift from a Crydean Sorcerer for some favor of the grand dukes around 82AN.The Shakers come at night time and chip away the paint saying that it is actually making them sick. The Helguards are very particular about any vandalization to the bricks and when one is caught, the perpetrator is severally punished. This punishment causes Shakers to point their fingers as proof.
History
This gate is notorious as the Grand duke has used it as a display of his soverignty to the locals. around 128AN he captured an assassin who came from the Shakes. It is unsure if he actually was from there but fingers were pointed and people were hung, their bodies hung of the gates for many weeks as they rotted in the summer heat. Many riots have gathered here to protest the grand dukes rule over the decades and all start at the gates of Woe. It has become a symbol of oppression for the shakers.A line with two archs, is the sign of injustice.
Tourism
Not many come to these gates, most use other routes out or into the city, but the unknowing coming from the north sometimes come through. This is a place of deep seated anger, like a cauldren of boiling water ready to overflow. At the double gate Helguard are never alone and eyes are always looking at the red walls with grinding teeth.
